Sung says. Furthermore, one should accumulate merit through the seven-branch practice: prostration, offering, exhortation, and supplication are all means of accumulating merit; confession purifies obscurations; rejoicing increases virtue; and dedication greatly expands the virtues of accumulation, purification, and increase, ensuring they are not wasted. It is said that through these methods, one can obtain an immeasurable accumulation of merit, so one should strive greatly (238). Fourthly, from beginningless lifetimes until now, the ripening of negative actions and accumulated sins has created extremely powerful obstacles to liberation, the realization of the path to omniscience, and the manifestation of its fruit. If these are not purified, one will continue to wander endlessly in samsara and experience suffering, just as water continuously flows from a bucket. Therefore, one must strive to purify sins and obscurations. The Sutra Collection states: "Even a small sin can cause great destruction and immense suffering in the next life, like poison entering the body." It also says: "For the sake of one's own happiness, if one indulges in sinful actions, the ripening of those sins will be experienced like smoke." And so on, many things are said. The method for purifying sins is generally taught as the four powers (239), as stated in the Sutra Teaching the Four Dharmas: "Maitreya, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses four qualities will overcome the sins they have committed and accumulated. What are these four? They are the power of regret, the power of reliance, the power of remedy, and the power of restraint." Like that. The first power is to confess past sins with regret. The second power is to uphold and recite sutras, to have faith in emptiness and to recite mantras, to make images of the Buddha and stupas, to make offerings to them, and to proclaim the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and so on. The third power is to take vows, starting with abstaining from the ten non-virtuous actions. The fourth power is explained as taking refuge and meditating on the mind of enlightenment, and so on. However, in this context, confession is based on meditation and recitation (240), which involves regretting past sins and having the intention to refrain from them in the future.

Therefore, the four powers are complete in meaning. In particular, recitation can eliminate sins, as stated in the 'Inquiry of Good Arms Sutra': Just as a fire spreads in a Sala forest, burning all vegetation without restraint. The fire of recitation is fueled by the wind of discipline, and the great fire of diligence burns away sins. Just as sunlight melts a snow mountain, unbearable in its heat, the sunlight of discipline, through recitation, melts away the snow of sin. Just as a small lamp dispels darkness, eliminating all darkness, the darkness of sins accumulated over thousands of lifetimes is quickly dispelled by the lamp of recitation. So it is said. Furthermore, due to any of the four causes—ignorance, abundant afflictions, negligence, and laziness—it is not permissible for transgressions and downfalls to occur immediately (241), so one must repeatedly confess. As stated in the 'Compendium Sutra': Even the smallest sin should not be despised, thinking it harmless. Accumulating drops of water can gradually fill a large container. And so on. Also, as stated in the 'Well Accomplished Sutra': What is done negligently during the day should be confessed individually at night. What is done at night should be confessed during the day. One should rejoice in virtuous deeds. So it is said. The meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva is as stated in the 'Ornament of the Essence': On a white lotus moon disc, visualize Vajrasattva well, and recite the hundred-syllable mantra twenty-one times according to the ritual. Transgressions and so on will be blessed and purified, and will not increase. The accomplished ones have said this, so it should be practiced during session breaks. Having recited one hundred thousand times, one will become the nature of complete purity. So it is said. Fifth, in general, from all the sutras and tantras (242), it is widely proclaimed that relying on a guru is the root of the path for seeking liberation, the characteristics of a guru, the way to rely on a guru, and the necessity and benefits of relying on a guru. In particular, in the secret mantra, it is taught to follow an accomplished guru, and it is widely emphasized that the way to rely on a guru must be careful. Especially the Kagyu lineage is considered the path of blessing, therefore, unarisen realization is made to arise, and arisen realization is enhanced, both of which depend on the guru's blessing.
