Those who understand the ground and have a strong desire to cultivate through calm abiding should carefully contemplate the meaning of these scriptures, so that they may gain certainty in their view. Moreover, there are many teachings on meditating without concepts after gaining the view. As it says in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "The wise know the conditioned and the unconditioned, all conceptions of signs are destroyed, if one abides in the signless, then one always knows all dharmas are empty." Also, as quoted from the Arya Ratnamegha Sutra in the Stages of Meditation: "Whatever is understood by any mind, if one searches everywhere for its essence, one realizes it is empty. Having realized it in this way, one enters the yoga of the signless." It also says: "Having examined with higher seeing and realized no self-nature, one enters the signless." Also, as it says in the Intermediate Stages of Meditation: "Thus, having analyzed with wisdom, when the yogi does not grasp the essence of any object as ultimate truth, then he enters into non-conceptual samadhi." Also, in the commentary on the Dharani of Entering Non-Conceptuality, written by Kamalashila, it is said that after analysis, one must abide in non-conceptuality. Also, in the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, it says: "Through scripture and reasoning, having ascertained that all dharmas are without cause and without self-nature, one should meditate on non-conceptuality." These have finished explaining the doubts about view, practice, and result. What has been said above seems useful for all samadhi practices, including sutra, tantra, and pith instructions, so it has been briefly explained in a general way. Second, to explain in detail the uncommon stages of meditation on Mahamudra: first, the determination to generate faith; the preliminaries to the stages of meditation; and the actual stages of meditation on Mahamudra. Divided into three parts. The first part: explaining the greatness of the Dharma to be practiced, and the greatness of the person who practices it. The first part: the determination of Mahamudra, the way it is taught in all sutras and tantras, especially the way it is spoken of in the unsurpassed tantras, the four ways of understanding the meaning of all sutras and tantras. The first part: the meaning of the name and synonyms, the essence and divisions, the faults and merits of not knowing and knowing. The first part is: this Dharma.

If we derive from the term "Mahāmudrā" (Sanskrit), it means "Great Seal." Generally, "seal" includes various meanings such as seal, sign, symbol, and approximate characteristics. The reason why "seal" is used to express the meaning of applying or having applied is because, for example, worldly stamps (164) are applied to other things, so they are called "seal." Similarly, because it is applied to all things of samsara and nirvana, it is called "seal." The reason why "seal" is used to represent a symbol is because, for example, signs such as armor symbolize their respective differences. Similarly, because it symbolizes the nature or reality of all things of samsara and nirvana, it is called "seal." The reason why "seal" is used to represent the inviolable is because, for example, once a king's decree is sealed, the subjects cannot violate it. Similarly, all things of samsara and nirvana cannot transcend it, so it is called "seal." In accordance with this, the Sutra Requested by Akashagarbha says, "The seal affixed by the Tathagata" means "The undifferentiated Suchness is the seal, without division, without entry, without attachment, indestructible, immovable. The world with gods, humans, and asuras (165) cannot move it. Why? Because the world with gods, humans, and asuras is sealed by this seal. The Tathagata's seal is the seal of utter non-arising, the seal of utter emptiness, the seal of utter signlessness, the seal of utter wishlessness, the seal of utter unconditionality, the seal of detachment, the seal of Suchness, the seal of true reality, the seal of space." "Great" means that there is nothing above this Dharma. As the Guhyasiddhi says, "The fourth, the unsurpassed tantra, is the one who actualizes enlightenment, the one who practices Mahāmudrā, there is nothing above it." Also, as the Mahāmudrā Drop says, "This is the Great Seal, the hand is the wisdom of emptiness, the seal is liberation from the Dharma of samsara, great is union." Therefore, "hand" means the self-aware wisdom of emptiness. In the Five Stages, it says, "(166) Self-awareness wisdom by oneself is, well seen..."
