Like this, distinguishing by whether or not there is mindfulness with definitive understanding of the view, etc., is the same as before. Also, some do not accept the previous three methods, but first, having drawn definitive understanding of the meaning of emptiness, then, holding that meaning without the mind wavering, and abiding without examining other aspects, this is meditating on the view without error. Like the first method, there is also no mind not turning towards emptiness; like the second method, there is also no not remembering the view when abiding in non-conceptualization (145); like the third method, although initially there is examination of the view, it is also not that one does not remain on the view thereafter. To this view, others say: This seems to be only remembering the view, and then only doing abiding meditation on the view, so there is only calm abiding that meditates on emptiness, and there is no way to cultivate insight meditation of analytical meditation, so it is a one-sidedness of calm abiding and insight not being connected. Although they refute it like this, if it is abiding meditation that is not distracted from the view that is attained by accomplishing the insight meditation of analytical meditation, then it is not necessary to examine again and again with conceptualization that has sound and meaning, so it is not appropriate to refute it. Although there only appears a basis for examination of whether or not there is clinging to experience of the root view, etc., the way of explaining it is good. Also, some scholars, when identifying the view, through refuting the way of clinging that their own ignorance has fabricated, on the emptiness of self-nature, which is the opposite of that, generating strong definitive understanding (146), one must meditate on emptiness, and also, merely being accustomed to remembering the view and abiding on it, is only exhausted in the way of cultivating calm abiding, so one must examine again and again, and generate strong definitive understanding, and also, for the meaning of the nature of phenomena, all that is grasped by the mind will not become apprehension of characteristics of clinging to reality, and also, all non-conceptualization that is separated from individual conceptualization will become the meditation of Heshang, etc., they explain like this. Some of their followers say: When examining and scrutinizing all phenomena of grasper and grasped with the reasoning of Madhyamaka, everything is empty of truth, the meaning of selflessness, and, turning the mind towards that, generating a strong way of clinging to selflessness or emptiness of truth, this is the definitive understanding of the view, and, putting that on the horse of calm abiding, and abiding in equanimity, this is making it the correct view and meditation, and they speak of all other methods as being the same as before. These should be examined, in the previous

The ascertainment that strongly generates certainty on the emptiness of self-nature as explained through analysis does not go beyond the clinging that thinks, "There is no self-nature" or thinks, "It is not established by self-nature." In this way, it appears similar to the later view. In the later view, the way of holding that all phenomena are without self or empty of truth does not go beyond holding onto no-self or the absence of truth. The more intense that is, the more it will increase clinging. Therefore, although self-grasping is prevented, it seems that one is still clinging to no-self or looking at no-self; although grasping at truth is prevented, it seems that one is still clinging to the absence of truth or looking at the absence of truth. This is said to be a very great fault. As it says in the Stages of Meditation, "One should contemplate that all phenomena are without self-nature. Thinking that there is no self-nature whatsoever should also be abandoned with correct wisdom." And so forth, which directly contradicts. As it says in the Root Wisdom, "Those who view emptiness, are said to be incurable." And, "One should not say empty, nor should one say not empty." And so forth, and, "Those who view self-nature, other-nature, entity and non-entity, do not see the Buddha's teaching, the very meaning of that." And, "To say 'exists' is to think of permanence, to say 'does not exist' is to view annihilation." And as it says in the Explanation of the Awakening Mind, "Unborn and emptiness, no-self is called emptiness. Whoever meditates on a deficient self, does not meditate on that." And so forth, it becomes the former view. Furthermore, in the Root Wisdom it says, "If one views emptiness wrongly, those of little wisdom will be destroyed." In the commentary Clear Words, it says, "For example, if one thinks that everything is empty, that everything is not existent, then at that time this becomes a wrong view." Like that, it is close to becoming a wrong view. If one must cling to something, the side of existence is slightly better. As it says in the Root Wisdom, "The one who exists goes to a happy realm, the one who does not exist goes to a bad realm." Furthermore, remembering the view and placing it on that, it is also unreasonable to become merely calm abiding. If calm abiding and insight are not complete, then that view is not a correct view. If it is complete, placing it on that has complete insight, and if one thinks that all insight is conceptual and all calm abiding is non-conceptual, then conceptual and non-conceptual.
