As it is said, it is merely fabrication. Furthermore, as antidotes, ugliness is the antidote to attachment, love is the antidote to hatred, and meditating on dependent origination is the antidote to delusion. In the context of calm abiding, many instances of analytical meditation are extensively taught. Similarly, in the context of insight, although analytical meditation is predominantly emphasized according to the three or four stages of insight, ultimately, through analysis by discriminating wisdom, even the discriminating wisdom itself becomes pacified, and nothing is seen. This is not a loss of insight, but rather the correct realization of insight. Therefore, at that time, it is necessary to practice placement meditation. As it is said in the Questions of Kāśyapa: Just as fire arises from rubbing two sticks together, and the fire that arises burns those two sticks, similarly, when the power of wisdom arises, it burns the two that gave rise to it. And as it is said in the Madhyamakāvatāra: Ordinary beings are bound by concepts, while non-conceptual yogis become liberated. Therefore, whatever is a perversion of concepts, the wise declare to be the fruit of analysis. Thus and so forth. Having attained the union of calm abiding and insight, although there are times when analytical meditation needs to be cultivated alternately, the main practice is placement meditation. The scriptural sources for this will be explained below. However, for beginners, if analytical meditation and insight become too dominant and lead to agitation, then one should practice calm abiding. If placement meditation and calm abiding become too dominant and lead to dullness, then one should practice insight. When calm abiding and insight are in equilibrium, one should practice equanimity without intentionality. As it is said in the First Stage of Meditation: If one does not eliminate mental sinking, then due to extreme sinking, there is no insight, and the mind becomes like a blind person. Therefore, if the mind sinks, it should be eliminated. When insight is cultivated and wisdom becomes very strong, then, like placing a candle in the wind, the mind will waver, and therefore, one will not be able to see clearly. Therefore, at that time, one should practice calm abiding. Even if calm abiding becomes too dominant, one should cultivate wisdom. And it says: When the two proceed together, without harming the body and mind,

One should abide without any manifestation of fabrication. Thus it is said. When shamatha and vipashyana are mixed and united, it is sufficient to abide in such a state of single-pointedness of mind (133), and it is not necessary to repeatedly alternate between investigation and abiding. As it says in the Gongdre: "By what measure are shamatha and vipashyana mixed and become equally yoked?" The answer is: "When one attends to the single-pointedness of mind itself." And: "What is the single-pointedness of mind itself?" The answer is: "Having realized that the image, the object of samadhi, is only consciousness, and after realizing that, attending to it in the same way." In its commentary, the master Yeshe Nyingpo says: "The path of shamatha is not different from the path of vipashyana, because it focuses on the mind that is the object of vipashyana. The path of shamatha focuses only on the mind that is the object of vipashyana. Therefore, the object and the subject are both the nature of mind, and therefore they are not different." As it is explained. Thirdly, some (134) say that when cultivating the view, one should first investigate with scripture and reason, generate a strong grasping of emptiness of inherent existence, and then do a little settling meditation on it. If the settling meditation is prolonged, it will become just shamatha as before, and vipashyana will be lost, so one should investigate as before. To explain that such alternating investigation and settling meditation should be practiced is very inappropriate. Because the grasping of emptiness of inherent existence that arises from relying on investigation with scripture and reason, no matter how it is done, does not go beyond grasping at emptiness, it will explain the reason why it does not become the correct view of vipashyana. In that case, even if one does settling meditation on it, one will not become a true meditator. According to your own system, if you alternate investigation and settling, then the initial samadhi of the view will not be accomplished, because you say that alternating investigation and settling will not accomplish shamatha, and the reason for settling in shamatha and settling at the beginning of the view is the same. It is also unreasonable to settle at the end of the investigation, because you say that settling will lose (135) vipashyana, so even if you do settling meditation on the view that has lost vipashyana, you will not become a true meditator. Even if the view of the union of shamatha and vipashyana arises, if you do not repeatedly investigate, it will become just shamatha again.
