Regarding the meaning of emptiness, one key point is needed. As Je Götsangpa said, "The ultimate destination of both the Pandit's analytical meditation and the Kusulu's settling (126) is the same, but the path of the Kusulu's method is faster." However, it is only possible to realize the correct view by relying solely on scriptural and logical analysis. This is because scriptural and logical analysis is analyzing with conceptual thoughts that have meaning, and it does not directly ascertain it, as Dharmakirti explained. Moreover, most accomplished masters, such as the two great chariot masters, have a history of being liberated by relying on the instructions of secret mantras and so on. In particular, many great masters such as Naropa and Maitripa were not liberated by relying on hearing and thinking based on scripture and logic, but were liberated by relying on the essential instructions of the heart. Moreover, it seems that most of the great accomplished ones of China and Tibet were liberated by relying on instructions. Therefore, some say that one cannot realize the view without relying on scripture and logic in general, and in particular, one cannot realize the view of suchness without relying on the reasoning of the Madhyamaka of Nagarjuna and his sons. (127) This seems to be merely asserting one's own opinion and is very unreasonable. If that were the case, then Nagarjuna and his sons themselves would not have realized the view of suchness before composing the treatises on reasoning, and the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and most of the accomplished ones of China and Tibet would not have realized the view of suchness. Furthermore, if we generally consider the meaning of the terms "analysis" and "settling," then all meditations that include analysis should be called analytical meditation, and all meditations that involve settling down and abiding should be called settling meditation. Otherwise, it would be difficult to explain the name and meaning of analysis and settling. Therefore, from meditating on the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment and impermanence to establishing the two selflessnesses, all meditations with analytical investigation of discernment are analytical meditation, and all meditations in which one single-pointedly settles the object of analysis with mindfulness are settling meditation. Some (128) think that when analyzing, one must analyze with conceptual thought, so one cannot settle; and when settling, one must abide without conceptual thought, so one cannot analyze. Therefore, they combine analysis and settling.

It is also unreasonable to think that they are contradictory. In the first stage of the Gradual Path of Meditation, it is said that one should investigate with wisdom while in the state of Śamatha, and that wisdom in a state of Samāhita should examine. Vasubandhu, in his commentary on the Ornament of the Sūtras, says that there is Vipassanā with both investigation and analysis, Vipassanā without investigation but with analysis, and Vipassanā without either. Moreover, there are many instances where Vipassanā's examination must be done without losing the state of settling. For example, in the case of Śamatha, generating mindfulness is also examining from within the state of settling, and such instances are very numerous. Secondly, some people think that if one alternates between examination and settling when cultivating Śamatha, Śamatha cannot be accomplished, so one must only do settling meditation. And they think that if one is separated from examination (129) by discriminating wisdom when meditating on Vipassanā, Vipassanā will be lost, which is very unreasonable. According to the former view, practices such as examining purification and afflictive purification would become unsuitable as objects of Śamatha, and it would also be unreasonable to generate powerful discriminating wisdom and mindfulness when cultivating Śamatha. According to the latter view, Vipassanā, which teaches that even discrimination itself is pacified at the end of examination by discriminating wisdom, would be unreasonable. Moreover, the Vipassanā of non-discrimination and immovability mentioned in the Gradual Path of Meditation would also be unreasonable. Furthermore, according to your view, there is no Śamatha during examination, and no Vipassanā during settling. This is because you consider examination to be solely investigation and analysis, and Śamatha to be solely non-discrimination. Moreover, you believe that Vipassanā is lost if one engages in settling meditation, and that it is necessary not to be separated from discriminating wisdom. (130) If one speaks in this way, then the union of Śamatha and Vipassanā would also be impossible, and the basis of direct perception free from conceptualization and Vipassanā being the same would also be impossible, which is far too extreme. So, what should be done? In the case of Śamatha, although settling meditation is predominant according to the practice of the nine stages of mind, it is said that once Samādhi is stable, one must also engage in examination meditation. As it says in the first stage of the Gradual Path of Meditation: When the attention is stable, one should focus in detail on the aggregates and elements, etc.
