is the supreme practice of Prajnaparamita. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Like a mirage, a city of Gandharvas, like an illusion, like a dream, contemplate the characteristics, whose essence is emptiness. All dharmas should be known in this way. As such, there are many statements in the sutras. Among them, the meaning of "like an illusion" is: for all the appearances that arise in the subsequent wisdom, one thinks that they are not true, that they are like an illusion, and holds them with conceptual mind. This is called "illusion made by conceptual mind", which is to make an assumption like an illusion and then cling to it. Sometimes, there are things that need to be done now, but that is not the meaning of meditating like an illusion. So, what should it be like? For example, the horses, elephants, etc. conjured up by a magician, from the beginning, have not been established as the nature or essence of horses and elephants, but they undeniably appear as horses and elephants. The audience of the illusion and the magician are similar in terms of the way they appear, but in terms of the state, there is a difference in whether or not they cling to the horses and elephants (122) as their own characteristics. Similarly, in terms of people and dharmas, ordinary people cling very firmly to what appears, while yogis know from the depths of their hearts that all that appears is merely appearance, and has not been established as the nature or essence of things. Therefore, just as a magician sees the scene of an illusion, yogis clearly know that all dharmas are without self-nature in the ultimate truth, but in the relative truth, the appearance of phenomena does not cease, it is merely appearance, and this is the meaning of what is called like an illusion. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Magicians conjure up images, conjuring up horses and elephants, and various kinds of vehicles. But in that, there is nothing that is as it appears. All dharmas should be known in this way. By familiarizing oneself with yoga, one will not waver from the state of dharmata, and the equipoise and the subsequent attainment like an illusion will also merge together. Everything appears as the play of dharmata, (123) free from dualistic grasping, and thus one will attain the realization of union. As it is said in the Compendium: Whether one abides in equipoise or arises, there is no arrogance. Why? Because one has fully known the nature of dharmas. Thus, after gaining the insight of vipassana, when guarding it, one should rely on the continuous mindfulness that does not stray from the state of the view itself, and

Guarding with the awareness that dispels excitement, generating a mind of attention on the view that is free from sinking and excitement, and then the way to cultivate equanimity by not paying attention to anything else, and how those are accomplished by the four types of attention, such as diligently engaging, should be understood in the same way as explained in the Śrāvakabhūmi, like śamatha and vipaśyanā. With those, the stages of vipaśyanā meditation have been explained. Third, regarding the discernment of how to cultivate view and practice, there are the distinctions between analytical meditation and stabilizing meditation, how to engage in analysis and stabilization in śamatha (124) and vipaśyanā, how to engage in analysis and stabilization in view and meditation, and the explanation of the discernment of the actual view itself. First, some think that the meditations of the paṇḍitas are only analytical meditation, and the meditations of the kusālis are only stabilizing meditation. Likewise, some think that scholars rely on treatises and only engage in analysis through hearing and thinking, and kusālis rely on instructions and only engage in samādhi. That is not correct, because even scholars need stabilizing meditation to stabilize the meaning of what is to be meditated on, and kusālis also need analytical meditation to cut off exaggerations about the view. Moreover, the view sought only through analysis and investigation becomes a conceptual view, and the view of only stabilizing becomes merely an experience of the mind. Therefore, without both analysis and stabilization, it is difficult to find the meaning of correct meditation. So, what is the recognition and difference between what is known as analytical meditation and (125) stabilizing meditation? It is merely that such terms are applied according to the importance of analysis and stabilization. That is, taking inference as the path, the stage of meditation that mainly relies on the analysis and investigation of scripture and reasoning to establish the view is analytical meditation, and taking direct perception as the path, the stage of meditation that mainly relies on the samādhi of suchness itself to establish the view is called stabilizing meditation. The former is the stages of meditation that rely on the treatises of the noble Asaṅga and the protector Nāgārjuna, with a greater emphasis on the analysis of scripture and reasoning, and the latter is the stages of meditation that are transmitted from the great Brahmin and Śavarīśvara, etc., with a greater emphasis on stabilizing on the meaning of reality. The view of the realization of both is reality.
