As it is said, "From where does clinging arise? What can the great demon do to me?" Thus, the clinging to self and other is the root of samsara. If this self-clinging is not pacified, it will repeatedly arise again and again, and one will not be liberated from existence, but will revolve like a wheel. Some who desire liberation do not recognize that the root of karma and affliction is self-clinging, nor do they know how to abandon it. They desire to abandon the suffering that is the result of karma and affliction, and so they abandon non-virtue and engage in the virtue of conditioned phenomena such as listening and contemplating. However, if their thoughts and actions are wrong, it is uncertain what will happen. Even if they are right, those practices only serve as a means to pacify self-clinging, but they cannot actually pacify it. Some meditators say that in order to actually pacify self-clinging, one must meditate on selflessness. However, by blocking the clinging to existence, they generate a strong conviction of clinging to non-existence, which only increases clinging and causes them to fall into great nihilistic views. Some who think they are meditating well develop attachment to the experiences that arise from their meditation. Because they have not straightened the path, they wander into the four places of loss and the three wrong paths. This is because clinging arises in meditative equipoise, which becomes the root of loss and error. When clinging arises in post-meditation, it becomes the cause of samsara again from karma and so on. Therefore, all faults arise from clinging to the mind, so it is very important to not cling (page 739). As the great Brahmin said, "If you cherish the thought that something is pleasing and keep it in your heart, even the prick of a sesame seed husk will only cause suffering." And, "Clinging to things is like an animal, but clinging to nothing is even more foolish." And, "Whatever you are attached to, let it go." Thus, for a yogi, whatever experiences arise from meditating on forms or formlessness, or whatever appearances arise based on ordinary habitual tendencies, such as self-arising, it is said that the best path is to remain without clinging. As Je Gampopa said, "Whatever arises, do not cling to it. There is no higher offering than this path." That is, if one becomes accustomed to cultivating the state of non-clinging, the karmic appearances of habitual tendencies will be purified, and all conceptual thoughts (page 740) will arise and

simultaneously transform, at that time the defilements of elaboration will not stain the mindstream, and all appearances will transform into the play of the Dharmakaya, etc., many qualities are taught. As Lord Gampopa said: "These non-appearances and nine appearances with deep imprints, practicing non-grasping, not abandoning, are pure abodes. Whatever is grasped by the mind is the seed of signs. Not grasping anything, arising and liberation are simultaneous." And: "If the mind does not grasp anything, no matter what appears, the defilements of elaboration do not stain the mindstream." And: "If the defilements of dualistic grasping are not abandoned for a moment, whatever that is, is the adornment of the Dharmakaya itself." And: "If there is no calculation, conceptual thoughts arise and liberate simultaneously. If there is no desire, everything is equality. If you realize this way, there is no interruption in meditation. Because there is no birth and death, it is the king of transformation. Because there is no grasping at signs, it is the circle of clear light." Thus it is said. The way to attain liberation while grasping is: when the grasping of self inwardly and the grasping of what belongs to self outwardly are exhausted, the connection of clinging to the aggregates will cease. When the connection of clinging to the aggregates ceases, birth ceases. When that ceases, karma and afflictions cease, and liberation is attained, as it says in the Root Wisdom: "In the inner and outer, when self and what belongs to self are equally exhausted, clinging will cease, and when that ceases, birth ceases. When karma and afflictions cease, there is liberation." Thus it is. Therefore, non-grasping, non-attachment, non-objectification, non-sign, no support, no negation and affirmation, no abandonment and adoption, no hope and fear, no desire, etc., all the key points are the same. Therefore, after thoroughly ascertaining these principles with reason, in the respective situations of the four yogas, etc., on the meaning of each of your virtuous practices, it is extremely important to know that not engaging in grasping is important in all ways! Third, the way to traverse the bhumis and paths with these is: although Lord Gampopa and his disciples did not explicitly teach the way to combine the four yogas of meditation with the bhumis and paths explained in the characteristic vehicle, the accomplished Zhang, a disciple of Lord Gomtsul, said: "With one decisive Great Seal, it is a mistake for fools to calculate the bhumis and paths. However, for the sake of pleasing fools, the bhumis and paths of the characteristic vehicle, here too, should be diligently calculated." Thus he said, the Great Seal, the nature of Dharmata, the path.
