Ro. Some (708) consider the absence of conceptual proliferation of grasping and grasper to be the meaning of freedom from elaboration (spros bral). Others think that the certainty of recognizing all phenomena as emptiness is the meaning of freedom from elaboration, but these views are not reasonable. According to the former, even mere quiescence without thought would become freedom from elaboration. According to the latter, even the clinging that arises from the certainty of emptiness and non-inherent existence would become freedom from elaboration. Therefore, it is said that the nature of mind is realized at the time of freedom from elaboration, and the nature of mind is described as unconditioned, unchanging like the sky. As it says in the sutra: "Profound, peaceful, free from elaboration, luminous, unconditioned." And in the Uttaratantra: "Whatever is the luminous nature of mind, that is unchanging like the sky." Such yoga of freedom from elaboration is also threefold: Although one realizes that the essence of mind is free from the elaboration of arising and ceasing, one is not free from the experience of certainty that grasps it as empty, and there is hope (709) of wandering in samsara and fear of hoping for nirvana, this is minor freedom from elaboration. Because the experiences of mind's appearance-grasping and emptiness-grasping are purified, one realizes that mind itself is without basis or root, but clinging to hope and fear arises in relation to external appearances, and conceptual imputation is not cut off, this is intermediate freedom from elaboration. For all inner and outer phenomena included in appearance and existence, samsara and nirvana, the clinging of emptiness-grasping certainty is liberated, and being free from hope and fear, conceptual imputation is cut off, this is great freedom from elaboration. The distinction between whether freedom from elaboration is complete or not is: seeing the essence of mind as freedom from elaboration, the clinging of certainty is liberated. The root of the experiencer of freedom from elaboration is cut off, so that all elaborations naturally dissolve in a state of purity, then the essence of freedom from elaboration is seen. Because all aspects of emptiness-grasping or certainty are experiences of freedom from elaboration, even if a small part of them remains, the essence is not seen. If there is not even a trace of hope and fear and emptiness-grasping, and all conceptual imputation is cut off in freedom from elaboration, then the power of (710) freedom from elaboration is perfected. Although one knows the nature of thought to be unborn, hope and fear arise in relation to external appearances, and the experience of emptiness-grasping is not cleared, then the power is not perfected. All thoughts are the play of emptiness, and all appearances are the appearance of emptiness.

When, having recognized one's own nature, all subsequent awareness and appearances arise as if in a state of meditative equipoise, conceptual thought arises as meditation. If the realization of meditative equipoise is not transformed into the path through subsequent awareness and appearances, conceptual thought does not arise as meditation. When one encounters the circumstances of the path that awaken qualities, such as skillful means, and the signs of accomplishment and realization are connected, the qualities of freedom from elaboration arise. Even if one realizes the meaning of the nature of reality, if one does not encounter the circumstances of the path and there is no appearance of the signs of accomplishment, qualities do not arise. When emptiness arises as cause and effect, and the nature of mind is not established as anything at all, but the collection of conditions can transform it into anything, if one grasps this interdependent origination, one masters relative truth. Obscured by the ignorance that is deluded about the cause and effect of karma (711), if one does not understand the interdependent origination of cause and effect, one does not master relative truth. When emptiness arises as the unceasing power of non-objectifying compassion, and one knows how to arrange the illusory interdependent origination of bodhicitta, aspirations, and so forth in subsequent awareness, the seed of the form body is planted. Even if one realizes emptiness, it is difficult to generate compassion, and if one does not arrange the interdependent origination of benefiting others, the seed of the form body is not planted. Secondly, the time of lesser freedom from elaboration. Although the nature of all phenomena is free from the elaboration of arising, ceasing, and abiding, there is still the clinging to emptiness in all things. In subsequent awareness, the clinging to enemies, friends, attachment, and aversion arises very strongly. Sleep and dreams also mostly occur in a confused state. There are great differences in virtuous practice. Sometimes faith and certainty arise towards the lama, Dharma friends, and one's own virtuous practice, and sometimes doubt may also arise. The time of intermediate freedom from elaboration. From those experiences of clinging to emptiness (712), there is less attachment to anything. The root of conceptual thought is severed, and the imputation on the movement is cut off, but on the appearance, there will still be occasional strong hopes and fears. At the time of subsequent awareness and dreams, various things, such as confusion and non-confusion, occur. Faith and doubt, etc., towards the lama, Dharma friends, and virtuous practice, also occur with occasional ups and downs. Sometimes one also thinks that there is neither attainment of Buddhahood nor rebirth in hell. The time of great freedom from elaboration. Because the root of all phenomena of samsara and nirvana is severed, all imputation, both internal and external, is cut off, and there is no hope or fear. For all phenomena, there is no comfort or pain of being empty or not empty, etc.
