Due to the clinging to inherent existence, and even in various kinds of freedom from elaboration (681), there is a part of clinging to emptiness and definite understanding. Therefore, one feels comfortable in virtuous practices related to emptiness, but uncomfortable with the aspect of appearance. This is because one has not truly understood the essence of union. Even in the state of one taste, there is a subtle clinging to emptiness that has not been integrated into union. Even if integrated into union, there is a flaw in the experience where it appears like an illusion. In various kinds of non-meditation, there is a failure to recognize non-conceptualization in the subsequent appearance. It is said that these exist in the foundational consciousness, abiding in a state of non-conceptual, unspecified nature. This is because the self-clarity of reality has not yet dawned, and therefore it is considered a flaw of the knowable. Fifth, Je Gomchung said: 'Single-pointedness has separation, no attainment. Freedom from elaboration has both separation and attainment. One taste has no separation, has attainment. Non-meditation has neither separation nor attainment.' This means that in single-pointedness, if one becomes distracted, meditation is lost, so there is separation. Even if held by mindfulness, one only finds the continuity of that virtuous practice in one's own state, but there is no way to attain the meditation as it is (682). In freedom from elaboration, if one grasps and then loses mindfulness, meditation is lost, so there is separation. Once held by mindfulness, one sees the nature of unborn, so one attains meditation as it is, so there is attainment. In one taste, even if not held by mindfulness in the post-meditation state, the continuity of realization is not interrupted, so there is no separation. As soon as one is held by correct mindfulness, appearance dawns as emptiness, so there is attainment. In non-meditation, since the wheel of mindful awareness arises, there is no separation from meditation. Since whatever appears is sufficient, it is considered that there is no newly attained meditation. Sixth, Je Gomchung said: 'Single-pointedness has its own state of equipoise and post-meditation. Freedom from elaboration distinguishes equipoise and post-meditation separately. One taste mixes equipoise and post-meditation at the same time. Non-meditation is solely equipoise.' This means that in single-pointedness, since the wisdom of non-conceptualization as it is has not arisen, there is no characteristic of equipoise. Since appearance is not realized as unborn, post-meditation does not appear like an illusion (683), so there is no characteristic of post-meditation. However, in the virtuous practice of single-pointedness in its own state, there is the ability to abide in equipoise and to attain after being distracted and remembering. In freedom from elaboration, for all phenomena of outer and inner, having been liberated from the dualistic grasping of object and subject, the wisdom of non-duality dawns transparently, which is non-conceptual wisdom, therefore it is the characteristic of equipoise.
