"That which is not established is realization." And asked, "What is the difference between experience and realization?" He replied, "Experience is that which does not go beyond the realm of consciousness. For example, like the sun in the clouds, the three states of bliss, clarity, and non-thought alternately appear high and low. If you do not cling to this and protect it, the defilements of consciousness will be purified, and realization will begin to appear. Realization is the inseparability of appearance and mind, and the state of clear light continuously (659) from the depths of consciousness. When it is free from the object of meditation and the meditator, realization and attainment appear simultaneously, which is called realization." In this way, the difference between experience and realization is distinguished. For these, some people say, "There are three kinds of experience, understanding, and realization. Experience is bad, understanding is medium, and realization is good." This also needs to be examined for a while. If experience means experience, then all sentient beings have experience. If it refers to the experience of meditation, then it exists from the small beginning of the accumulation path to the ultimate path. However, if it is the self-cognizant wisdom of each individual, then the noble ones have that experience. Understanding and realization are two different names for the same entity. It is only a difference in the translation of the same Sanskrit word by the translators." It is unreasonable to say this, because I have not seen these three being said to be bad, medium, and good, so this seems to be a fabricated slander. Moreover, since it has not been determined that experience must be bad, there is no need to mention the experience of the noble ones, etc. Even if it is said, it is possible to distinguish the difference between their experience and realization. Moreover, in this practice lineage, the occasion of the self-experience of realization and the inseparability of experience and realization is also recognized. If understanding and realization are the same in every way, then the distinction between scripture and realization must also be said to be the distinction between scripture and understanding, and the realization of the path must also be said to be the understanding of the path, etc., which would become very excessive. Moreover, there is a reason why the translators translate according to different situations. Also, if the clarity or unclearness of thoughts is established as understanding and realization, it is unreasonable. It is also unreasonable to say this, because according to your own statement, the difference between the clarity or unclearness of thoughts must become the difference between understanding and realization, so it contradicts what was said above (661).

For the reason of, and according to the order of combination, it is too extreme to say that one realizes unclear thoughts, and all realizations of non-discriminating wisdom must also be admitted as discriminating thoughts. Second, regarding the way the meaning of the four yogas is taught in the sutras and tantras, the meaning of the four yogas is commonly taught with reasoning, and the distinctions of each of the four yogas are explained separately, of these three, the first, in the Lankavatara Sutra, the Blessed One said: Great Wisdom, bodhisattvas mahasattvas who possess the four dharmas become yogis of great yoga. What are the four? They are as follows: cultivating the appearance of one's own mind, abandoning the views of birth, abiding, and cessation, realizing that external objects are non-objects, (662) and believing that the wisdom of each noble one is realized within. Great Wisdom, bodhisattvas mahasattvas who possess these four dharmas become yogis of great yoga. It is considered that this teaches the four yogas. Moreover, if explained separately, cultivating the appearance of the mind teaches the yoga of one-pointedness. In it, it says: Great Wisdom, how is a bodhisattva mahasattva skilled in cultivating the appearance of his own mind? It is as follows: Thus, the three realms are only one's own mind, free from self and what belongs to self, unwavering, free from taking and abandoning, defiled by the habitual tendencies of the place of beginningless time's elaboration of karma, associated with approaching the various forms of the three realms, the body and enjoyment and place (663) and realm of activity, appearing as following after discrimination, thus extremely discriminating. Because this saying is in accordance with the meaning of the yoga of one-pointedness. Abandoning the views of birth, abiding, and cessation teaches the yoga of non-elaboration. In it, it says: Great Wisdom, how does a bodhisattva mahasattva abandon the views of birth, abiding, and cessation? It is as follows: All things are the form of illusion and dream birth.
