As it is said. The actual practice of taking the path is: Regarding attachment, whether it is an external object or an internal sentient being, recognize the mind that is attached and clings to it, wanting to possess it as one's own, that clear and distinct thought. Regarding hatred, whatever the external cause, such as enemies or obstacles, recognize the mind that is displeased and cruel towards it, feeling uncomfortable in the heart. Regarding ignorance, recognize the state of mind that is dull, confused, and sluggish, such as drowsiness and sinking, where the mind is unclear. Regarding pride, recognize the thought that arises from clinging to self, the thought of "I," and the arrogance of being superior to others, the mind that becomes arrogant and considers itself better than others. Regarding jealousy, recognize the rough mind that feels uncomfortable in the mind when considering the wealth of others. Once these are recognized, one should understand, as before, to abandon self-grasping, to relinquish hope and fear, and so on. Sometimes, regarding the objects of affliction, such as places of attachment or places of hatred, when attachment and hatred arise naturally, one should try to make them stronger, thereby greatly increasing the afflictions. For example, generate or deliberately cultivate strong attachment and hatred, such as difficulty in breathing, changes in complexion, and shaking and trembling of the body. One should recognize these thoughts, and so on. It is said that the stronger the afflictions, the more effective the path-taking, and the greater the power to eradicate the habitual tendencies of the afflictions. Maitripa said: "Afflictions are great wisdom; like fire in the forest, they are the companion of the yogi." Whether or not it is transformed into the path, the way it appears is as before. Third, as it is said: "Conceptual thought is an obstacle; all obstacles arise from conceptual thought." And Naropa said: "Even the obstructions of disease and demons are included in conceptual thought. If one is sick, it is conceptual thought; if one is harmed, it is conceptual thought that harms; if one dies, it is conceptual thought that dies; if one is born, it is conceptual thought that is born. Happiness, suffering, and so on, all are conceptual thought. There is nothing in the mind. If the root of conceptual thought is cut, disease and demons will not arise." And Jetsun Rinpoche said: "The three aspects of appearing as a ghost, clinging to a ghost, and thinking of a ghost, even if they arise, arise from the yogi himself, and dissolve also

dissolves into awareness itself. In general, all obstacles are the magical displays of the mind. If one does not realize that self-appearance is empty and clings to ghosts as part of one's own being, then the yogi is mistaken. As the rock demoness said: Due to the contributing circumstances of one's own mind being deluded, if one does not take discursive thoughts as enemies, why would one take the rock demoness as an enemy? In general, this habitual demon arises from the mind. If one does not know the suchness of the mind, even if you say, "Go away!" I will not go. And so on. As it is said, all clinging to ghosts are the magical displays of one's own thoughts. Appearing as the forms of gods and ghosts is the experience that arises when the mind clings to those thoughts. For example, when the thought arises that a rope is a snake, the rope appears as a snake. The cause and condition for this to occur is that within one's own karmic body, the root of the three poisons of affliction resides, and when wind enters into that, clinging thoughts and illusions arise that are in accordance with it. That is, from ignorance arises the kinds of nagas and earth lords, from anger arises the kinds of tsen and malevolent spirits, and from desire arises the clinging thoughts and appearances of femalevolent spirits such as rakshasis. Later, if one transforms that into the path, virtuous actions arise, fearful thoughts clear, dullness thickens, and the harm of those spirits pacifies and they are brought under control, all of these appear like the high and low of a balance scale. Regarding how to take it as the path, Je Gampopa said that there is a method called "Cutting Off the Four Ghosts," which is to establish that ghosts have no inherent existence. However, that method is somewhat inconsistent with the occasion of equal taste. The method of striking the vital point of ghosts is to leave the thought of the appearance of ghosts uncorrected in the state of non-duality of one's own mind. In addition, he said that gods and ghosts are the path, and this seems to be the meaning here. The actual way to take it as the path is that whether the magical displays of gods and ghosts actually occur or do not occur, but when one feels despondent, fearful, or anxious due to the apprehension that they will occur, one should seize that very mind itself and, as before, entrust it as the object of virtuous practice. No matter how large or small the magical display is, the method of subduing it is: a magical display more frightening than that magical display, such as the collapse of heaven and earth, the army of ghosts and weapons threatening and cutting, burning with fire and drowning in water, and so on.
