Thought is the conceptualization of self-nature. Conceptualization is a companion. Conceptualization is the path. Conceptualization is the firewood of wisdom. Thus it is said. Regarding the method of transforming conceptualization into the path, Lord Gampopa has spoken of many kinds, but here the method of taking the path is: First, recognizing the thought is: when any subtle or coarse thought, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, arises in the mind, and it stirs the mind, and any feeling of joy or displeasure arises clearly, then do not let it go on its own, but grasp it tightly with mindfulness. Secondly, abandoning self-grasping in the mind is: not to not think of that thought in the mind, but to gather the mind and meditate on a non-thinking wisdom as an antidote. Nor is it to investigate the origin, dwelling, and destination of that thought, etc., and to establish that it is without self-nature. Nor is it to let that thought go wild and follow it, guarding it with mindfulness, but from the very moment of recognizing that thought, to make that very thought, just as it is, without diminishing or adding to it, the object of virtuous practice. Do not cling to any good or bad, neither negate nor affirm. Nor follow it. Do not make any mental fabrications. But clearly, loosely, broadly, and without clinging, guard it. By doing so, whatever thought arises, there is no need to accept or reject, negate or affirm, modify or embellish, change or place, but that very thought will naturally appear as meditation. This is considered to be transforming conceptualization into the path. Maitripa said: From the unborn, thoughts arise suddenly, the very thought is the self-nature of the sphere. These two were originally not different, I have shown that these two have become one taste. Lord Gampopa said: Do not alter conceptualization, it is the self-nature of reality, know that it is liberated naturally without alteration. Lord Godtsangpa said: Again, when a thought arises, grasp it tightly with awareness, let it relax on its own, there is no doubt that it will be liberated naturally. Wavering is like unreal hail, without clinging, wavering is enough, this is called the arising of thought as meditation, knowing one's own nature is free from acceptance and rejection. Thus it is said. For those who have not yet been transformed, the strong fluctuations of conceptualization, at first, are like something rushing into the mind, and those virtuous

Even when practicing, there may be some discomfort. Because thoughts and karmic winds operate in the same way, it is a manifestation of the disturbance of karmic winds. In reality, since there is nothing that is not controlled by virtuous actions, gradually and effortlessly guide yourself into virtuous actions. Once you are accustomed to it, merely recognizing thoughts will transform them into virtuous actions. Finally, eliminate the barrier of hope and doubt: In carrying the practice into your life in this way (636), do not have hope for success or doubt about failure. Do not engage in any hesitation or concern. Adopt an attitude of disregard, non-attachment, and leaving no trace. These methods should also be applied to other practices. Secondly, in the "Two Examinations," it says: "Just as boiling also burns, and fire also scorches, similarly, the fire of desire burns, and the fire of desire also scorches." And so on. In the Samputika, it says: "Pacify desire with desire, subdue hatred with hatred, subdue ignorance with ignorance, subdue pride with pride, subdue jealousy with jealousy, subdue Vajradhara and all others." Like this, transform afflictions themselves into the path, and by becoming equal in taste with the nature of reality, the appearance is affliction, but the essence manifests as the five wisdoms. That is, gradually transform desire into discriminating wisdom, hatred into the wisdom of dharmadhatu, ignorance into mirror-like wisdom, pride into equality wisdom, and jealousy (637) into accomplishing wisdom, thereby realizing the state of the five victorious ones. The Samputika says: "Wisdom and affliction go together equally. These are indeed the five families, the five wisdoms and the five Buddhas." Like this. Therefore, if you have mastered the instructions for transforming the path, even if you rely on the six objects as objects of desire, you will not be tainted by the faults of the objects, just as transforming poison into nectar. In the "Two Examinations," it says: "The unpleasant actions of beings, whatever binds them, if they have skillful means, they will be liberated from the bonds of existence." And as the great Brahmin said: "Enjoying objects does not taint one with objects, just as the petals of a lotus flower are not touched by water. In any case, the root is yoga and taking refuge. How can one with a poison mantra be harmed by poison?" And: "Just as the salty water of the ocean, when drawn up by the mouth of a cloud, becomes sweet. When one acts for the benefit of others with a steadfast mind, (638) even the poison of objects is transformed into nectar."
