The reason why cultivation can turn into a deviation from reality is that, in general, all attachments (568) become obstacles to attaining liberation. In particular, if one considers experiences such as bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality to be better than others, it becomes a cause for rebirth in the higher realms; if one considers it to be worse than afflictions, it becomes a cause for rebirth in the lower realms. In short, all attachments and fixations are said to be deviations from the path. As the Great Brahmin said: "Whatever you cling to, that clinging obscures liberation. Thinking it is good, you will fall into samsara due to its illness. Thinking it is an inferior action, its ripening will never cease." It also says: "Alas! Do not cling to any object of desire, for this is a severe disease that torments the supreme mind of great bliss. If you become attached to an object that should be clung to, you will shoot the immaculate mind with the arrow of desire." It also says: "If you cherish a pleasant mind that has fallen into your heart, even a sting as small as a sesame seed husk (569) will only bring suffering." Also, as Birwapa said: "Thinking of reality in your mind, yet clinging to experience, if you cling to this and meditate with it as your goal, that is a deviation." That is how it is. Specifically, what kind of experience will temporarily become a deviation? Bliss becomes a cause for rebirth in the desire realm, clarity becomes a cause for rebirth in the form realm, and non-conceptuality becomes a cause for rebirth in the formless realm, therefore it does not become a cause for perfect and complete enlightenment. It is merely a temporary rest from not having to experience the suffering of the lower realms, and after experiencing the bliss of the three realms, one will eventually endlessly cycle through the three lower realms. As Je Gampopa said: "The three deviations of experience are: the body is happy, the mind is also happy, and the experience of increasing happiness in the body arises. If you cling to this and fixate on it, thinking it is the best, it becomes a cause for approaching the desire realm (570), and if you die at that time, you will deviate and be reborn in the desire realm. After experiencing the enjoyment of the bliss of the desire realm, it is easy to fall endlessly into the three lower realms. The experience of clarity arising from being free from dullness, if you cling to it and think it is the best, you will deviate and be reborn in the form realm. After experiencing the bliss and enjoyment there, it is easy to fall. For the experience of the wind of thoughts not moving, if you cling to it and think it is the best, you will be reborn in the formless realm.

It is the cause of approaching the form realm. At that time, when one dies, one falls into the formless realm. After experiencing the happiness and enjoyment there, one endlessly falls into the three lower realms. Like this, Phagmo Drupa said: Go to the venerable master, practice any instruction, and happiness will arise, filling body and mind. If one clings to and is attached to it, one will fall into the place of the desire realm (571). Clear and pure like the sky, inside and outside like the rising moon, there is no difference between opening and closing. If the practitioner clings to and is attached to it, one will fall into the form realm. Even if one looks outward or inward, there is not even a subtle thought. If one contemplates the stainless Dharmakaya and thinks of liking and disliking, if one definitely clings to that experience, one will fall into the formless realm. Like this, Glingrepa said: For the clear appearance of experience like a rainbow, the small-minded practitioner, like a child, becomes attached. This is a deceptive wrong path, but one does not recognize it. Like this, it seems that all the Kagyu lineages agree. Baharawa said: The wrong path of Mahamudra is: For all dharmas, like the sky, with the mind that thinks it is infinite, one falls into the wrong path of the infinity of space. Thinking (572) "consciousness is infinite," one falls into the wrong path of the infinity of consciousness. Thinking that all dharmas are nothing, through meditation one falls into the wrong path of nothingness. Thinking that all dharmas are neither existent nor non-existent, abiding in that state, one falls into the wrong path of the place of neither existence nor non-existence. For the samadhi of the mind, if one practices with discrimination and attachment, and meditates single-pointedly on the mind of joy and bliss, that is falling into the first dhyana. Generating love for samadhi, and meditating single-pointedly on the mind of joy and bliss, that is falling into the second dhyana. Samadhi without discrimination and examination, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness, happiness and mind are meditated single-pointedly, that is falling into the third dhyana. Completely pure equanimity, completely pure mindfulness, feeling of neither pleasure nor pain, and the mind is single-pointed, is the fourth dhyana. If one blocks the appearance of the objects of the six senses, and just places the mind on non-discrimination, and (573) completely without recollection, that is falling into the cessation of unconsciousness. For any place where there is no scriptural authority, consciousness becomes bewildered and cut off.
