Some terms are also mentioned occasionally. Furthermore, in the oral tradition of the Kagyu lineage, based on the teachings of "maintaining the uncorrected natural state of mind" and "the method of guarding without fabricating the awareness of circumstantial appearances," some mistakenly believe that even the self-characterized awareness disturbed by external circumstances must be guarded naturally; others mistakenly believe that any delusion that arises from not understanding the nature of the mind must be guarded without modification. These occurrences are highly inappropriate because they do not distinguish between temporary situations and what to accept and reject. One should realize the nature of the mind, its essence, and the state of all three characteristics, and after gaining great stability in that, when transforming all circumstances into the path, there is a time when it is appropriate to literally accept the teachings that one should not modify or abandon whatever arises in the mind, and that one should guard without fabricating the awareness of circumstantial appearances (p. 544). However, in other situations, if the clear intensity of the mind's true nature does not encounter obstacles, even the intense experience of bliss and clarity that arises temporarily should be eliminated, and awareness should be immediately guarded with the moisture of experience. Therefore, if one guards self-characterized delusions naturally without modification, one will not escape the cause of samsara. Considering this meaning, Jigten Sumgön said: "Uncorrected afflictions and thoughts are the dwelling place of the three realms of samsara. Uncorrected good experiences are the cause of being born in higher realms of the gods. Uncorrected nature of mind is the place of abiding in nirvana. Uncorrected non-duality of samsara and nirvana is the union of Mahayana practitioners. Uncorrected ultimate transcendence of mind, in the spontaneously accomplished, Benefit for others arises without effort, it is the ultimate fruit of no more learning." Thus, he distinguished (p. 545) the various aspects of being uncorrected. So, what is the meaning of what was said above? When recognizing the nature of the mind, one should not modify it with other things but guard it in its own nature, which is called "guarding the uncorrected natural state of mind." Whatever arises in the awareness of external appearances, one should proceed from recognizing its nature and not modify it with the clinging of acceptance and rejection, which is called "not fabricating the awareness of circumstantial appearances." Similarly, the so-called "mixing on top of circumstantial appearances" refers to directly placing the recollection on top of the circumstantial appearances.

To be mindful and to "let go when circumstances arise," this is said with the intention that letting go of clinging to objects will lead to practical results, so it is said that way. In short, in all post-meditation awareness and post-perception, if one is guarded by the continuous stream of present mindfulness, then all cognitive appearances of non-distracted mindfulness will become post-meditation, and if one possesses a stream of knowledge that understands the nature of reality, (546) then in post-meditation, whatever arises, one should maintain it naturally and not manipulate the appearance of circumstances, etc. In these aspects, one will gain certainty, so in all situations, one should cherish mindfulness that is not distracted from the essence, and the reason why mindfulness becomes the cause of the actual practice of meditation is also the same. As Lord Gampopa said: "The king of mindfulness is non-distraction, meditate on the view; do not be moved by various circumstances, strive for this; do not seek anything other than the stream of non-distracted mindfulness." And: "As long as you have not reached the end of clinging, then conceptual thoughts will arise, so it is best to rely on the guard of non-distracted mindfulness." That is how it is. Fifth, the distinction of how equipoise and post-meditation mix: Because there seem to be many different ways in which the minds of beings manifest, it is difficult to explain the way in which equipoise and post-meditation mix in a definite way, and I have not seen much explanation elsewhere. However, in some of Lord Gampopa's answers, someone asked: "What does it mean to mix the essence of equipoise and post-meditation (547)?" He replied: "Whatever of the four activities you do, if you always come to the essence without being separated from clear light, that is mixing." He also asked: "Sometimes mindfulness is lost and one falls into conceptual thoughts, and when mindfulness is regained, one returns to the essence, is that not mixing?" He replied: "That is not mixing." And as Lord Drikungpa said: "When equipoise and post-meditation exist, it is called a Bodhisattva; when equipoise and post-meditation do not exist, it is called an accomplished Buddha." According to this, the true mixing of the characteristics of equipoise and post-meditation seems to occur only in the state of great single taste and no-meditation. Because it is said that even in the post-meditation of great freedom from elaboration, there will not only be pure clear light of pure conceptualization, and it is said that even in the post-meditation of medium single taste, there will be some appearance of grasping and clinging. Also, Gomtsul asked Lord Gampopa (548): Equipoise and
