In the *Compendium*, it says, "If one knows the five aggregates to be like illusions, and does not make illusions different from the aggregates, then..." And in the *King of Samādhi Sūtra*, it says, "Like mirages, cities of gandharvas, like illusions, like dreams, meditating on signs that are empty by nature, know all phenomena to be like that." Like that. Although many examples of illusions are given, here, for easy understanding, they are combined. For example, the horses, cattle, etc., conjured by a magician, from the very beginning, do not at all exist as the nature or essence of horses, cattle, etc. However, through the power of substances and mantras, for the illusion performers and magicians who are deceived in their vision, from the perspective of appearance, they undeniably appear as horses, cattle, etc., without any difference (539). Regarding their situation, the difference arises in whether or not there is attachment and clinging to what resembles horses, cattle, etc. Here, just as in the vision of a magician, the appearance of all conceptual thoughts and objects such as forms and sounds that arise in the consciousness of conditioned appearances is similar to the appearance of ordinary people. However, in reality, it is determined that all of these do not at all exist as their own essence or nature, thereby cutting off superimposition. Therefore, appearing but without inherent existence, it arises in the mind like an illusion. As the *King of Samādhi Sūtra* says, "Magicians conjure forms, horses and elephants, various chariots. On them, whatever appears does not exist. Know all phenomena to be like that." Like that. Secondly, in general, for something to appear like an illusion, it must rely on both the sense consciousnesses grasping the appearance and the mind ascertaining emptiness. For example, the magician's eye consciousness grasps the appearance of the horses, cattle (540), etc., that he himself conjures, and the mind ascertains that the horses and cattle do not exist as they appear. Relying on these two, the certainty arises that the appearance of horses and cattle is merely a false appearance. Similarly, here too, in the post-meditation state of a yogi, all the appearances of conditioned appearances, conceptual thoughts, or forms, sounds, etc., undeniably appear to the senses such as eye consciousness, etc., relying on the interdependent arising of causes and conditions. And, relying on the memory that has been established with experience and certainty from previously determining conceptual thoughts and co-emergent appearances, conceptual appearanc

When one knows the emptiness of each thing's own nature or essence, the combination of the two gives rise to a post-meditation view like an illusion. As Shawa Ra said: "If you examine the meaning, it is free from the three objects of focus, it is not true, like a dream or illusion, free from attachment and without joy or sorrow, like a magician performing an illusion." Also, like: "All appearances and sounds are like illusions and mirages, like reflections, without real meaning or name. The mind itself, which appears as an illusion, is like the sky." Like that. In order to accomplish the emptiness aspect that arises in this way, it is mainly necessary to have a definite understanding that the nature of the innate mind itself is unborn, so it is important to emphasize the direct pointing out in meditation. In post-meditation, it is also important to emphasize the nature of both conceptual thoughts and innate appearances. In order to accomplish the appearance aspect, the arising and grasping of self-appearing thoughts and appearances arise from the power of various interdependent causes and conditions, and it is not necessary to deliberately accomplish it through the power of habituation. However, some people, due to being too attached to emptiness, may come to believe that there is no interdependence of cause and effect, which would be a great nihilistic view and is absolutely unacceptable. One should also gain a clear understanding of even the subtle interdependence of cause and effect. In short, (542) it is important to have both the knowledge that cause and effect are infallible, and to be proficient in that, and the certainty that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence. This is also said to be a place of wonder. As it says in the Commentary on the Bodhicitta: "Knowing that all phenomena are empty, whoever relies on actions and their fruits, this is more wonderful than wonder, this is more amazing than amazing." Thus, cutting off the nature or essence of all phenomena, and being free from all elaboration, is emptiness like the sky. While the nature or essence is empty, the appearance of forms and so on is emptiness like an illusion, as the wise ones of the past have said. Based on this, meditation is like the sky and post-meditation is like an illusion, which is widely known to most of the definitive meaning practitioners of today. Such non-conceptual meditation is transcendent wisdom, and post-meditation (543) like an illusion is worldly wisdom.
