Therefore, (the text) says to separate well without conflicting with meditation, which is for beginners. Furthermore, Gampopa said, "First, by being free from fabrication, relax the body and mind." This means that the posture of the body should not be too stiff, but should be natural and relaxed, and the mind should not have any intentional focus or effort, allowing the mind to be naturally spacious and relaxed. In the middle, do not hesitate, but remain in the original state. This means abandoning doubts such as "Is it right or wrong?" The meaning of "original state" is that one should not make any further modifications to the original state of the mind. (501) Finally, know that all arising feelings are unborn. This means that when causes and conditions appear, all arising feelings are liberated in the original state without forming the essence of arising, ceasing, and abiding, as soon as they are touched by the memory of recognition. Furthermore, Gampopa said, "Like the sky, raise the height," which means to let go of appearances in a spacious manner. "Like the earth, expand the expanse," which means to expand the scope of awareness. "Like a mountain, be stable," which means to keep the mind unmoving. "Like a candle, illuminate," which means to enhance the essence of awareness. "Like crystal, abandon impurities," which means to keep awareness clear and transparent without any obscurations of experience. These methods of cultivation mostly coincide with the common subsequent stages, and are therefore regarded as common methods of cultivation. Third, regarding the methods of cultivating Samadhi, it is divided into: pointing out the categories of the methods of cultivating the essence (502) and summarizing these points for explanation. The first part includes: explaining the six methods of cultivating the essence, explaining the well-known methods of placement, and explaining other categories of methods of cultivation. The first aspect is: Do not think, do not contemplate, do not worry, do not meditate, do not examine, abide in the natural state. It is said that these are the six methods of placement of Tilopa. "Do not think" means not following the thoughts of past events, because if you follow them, it will cause the mind to be continuously distracted. "Do not contemplate" means not modifying or calculating the current appearance of the mind, because if you do, the mind that is supposed to abide will be controlled by conditions. "Do not worry" means not anticipating the thoughts of future actions, because if you anticipate them, awareness will waver on its object and become unstable. These three methods are very famous, Brahmin

And Yenpo also said: "Having completely abandoned thought and what is to be thought, how does one abide like a young child?" And: "That mind that has no looking outward or inward, no one thinks of it, nor does it think of anything. The self-abiding, the diamond peak sings." And: "Having abandoned contemplation, what is there to think about?" And Shavara said: "Thus, in all aspects of the three times, in the mind there is nothing to do, free from extremes, in the natural state. Guarding that is what is called meditation." "Not meditating" means not meditating on anything that becomes an object of the mind, whether it has characteristics or is without characteristics. Because if one meditates, it becomes a grasping and fixating mental activity. Thus, the Great Brahmin also said: "Alas! Do not say that one should meditate on that which is devoid of nature. If one realizes the object of meditation and the meditator, having abandoned the mind of enlightenment with a mind that grasps at duality, that person commits a sin against himself." And: "The mind without meditation and what is to be meditated upon is devoid of nature. The ultimate without hope or fear is the diamond mind." And Shavara said: "If one does not realize, there is nothing to meditate on in the mind. For one who has realized, there is no object of meditation or meditator. Just as the sky does not aim at the sky." And Birwapa said: "Because the nature of mind is such that in space there is neither this nor that, therefore, there is neither meditation nor what is to be meditated upon." "Not examining" means that in that state of pacified elaboration, one should not again examine or think with the mind. Because if one does, one will again generate dualistic appearances and clinging to characteristics through the mind's conceptualization. Regarding this, the Great Brahmin also said: "The essence that is not stained by extremes, without defilement, is naturally pure from the beginning, so it is not to be examined by anyone. If one examines, it is only tormenting a nine-headed snake." And: "By examining the mind with one and many, abandoning clarity, one goes into existence. Seeing it and (505) falling into a pit, what is more pitiable than that?" And: "The mind without examination abides like the sky. The sky has no abiding, that itself is beyond words. For the mind beyond words, there is no need for examination or thought." And Shavara said: "The examined mind thoroughly binds the mind itself." And Birwapa said: "The self-nature is inexpressible, the essence is free from all relative phenomena. It is not to be examined or thought about,
