Therefore, by realizing it, one abandons all nets of wrong views. Thus it is. Therefore, it is necessary to understand how to abandon the thoughts and intentions of grasping and being grasped, and how to rely on the stream of non-conceptual mindfulness and intention. If all mindfulness and intention are taken as objects to be eliminated, it would be too extreme, which is not permissible. Second, regarding the recognition of shamatha and vipassanā, the general classification of cultivation methods, the cultivation method of shamatha, the cultivation method of vipassanā, and the classification of the mixing method of shamatha and vipassanā, there are five aspects. The first aspect is that even before "cultivating freedom from elaboration," shamatha and vipassanā can be distinguished, but when focusing on one point (496), experience and appearance dominate, so there is no definition of shamatha and vipassanā. However, some believe that it is possible to distinguish shamatha and vipassanā in their respective positions. The cultivation of shamatha means that without being separated from the faults of sinking and agitation, one rests the mind on the very nature of co-emergent mind, which was previously introduced. Abandoning all thoughts and intentions other than that, one keeps the mind calm until no conceptualization or distraction of signs arises. As it is said in Jowo's (Atisha's) "Quintessence of Madhyamaka": "Eliminate all faults such as sinking and agitation, and during that time, awareness does not conceptualize anything, nor does it grasp anything. Abandon all mindfulness and intention, and let awareness abide in that state until the enemy or thief of conceptualization or distraction does not arise." Thus it is. Among them, the way to abandon mindfulness and intention is, as mentioned above, not to fundamentally abandon the (497) mindfulness and intention that are not distracted from the matter itself, but to abandon the thoughts and activities of the mind that suddenly arise other than that. Moreover, as long as mindfulness is not distracted, conceptualization will not arise at all. If one is slightly distracted, conceptualization will suddenly arise. If one is very distracted, conceptualizations with attachment and various appearances will arise. This is merely an illusion called subsequent wisdom and subsequent appearance. When the previous mindfulness is found again, the mindfulness takes hold of the uninterrupted conceptualization. The conceptualization has not stopped, and without determining the essence, it appears as the union of appearance and emptiness. This is called subsequent attainment because it is regained after being lost. The cultivation of shamatha is like the sky...

I am known as the post-meditation like illusion. Thus, if there is no distraction in the actual practice, being one-pointed, even during the breaks between sessions, it becomes equipoise. If, after a slight (498) distraction, the calculation of mindfulness occurs during the actual session, it becomes post-meditation. As Je Zhang said: Like the center of pure space, clear and empty, unobstructed, without beginning or end, that which abides serenely and naturally is the equipoise of the first yogi. From that, the arising of discursive thoughts, even if meditated upon in bed, is post-meditation. The clear and empty, serene and natural one, even if abiding, chattering, walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, abides in the state of equipoise. Like that. At this time also, relying on the habit of the continuous stream of one's own nature, something like a mixture of equipoise and post-meditation occurs. Although it is not the definition of equipoise and post-meditation, it is considered to be the atmosphere of experience. Here, the meaning of Mahamudra is that, regardless of whether there are thoughts or not, recognizing the nature of whatever appears or arises, without alteration, it is absolutely impermissible to engage in acceptance or rejection and alteration. However, nowadays, when beginners practice (499), until the equipoise and post-meditation of realization are not mixed, during the actual session, mainly practicing equipoise, guarding the essence one-pointedly; during breaks between sessions and so on, mainly practicing post-meditation, transforming thoughts and appearances into the path and guarding them, this is understood to be the view of the Kagyu lineage. In most cases, practicing in that way will result in both stable equipoise and strong decisiveness in post-meditation. Moreover, these two also promote each other, and it seems that meditation will increase. Therefore, here also, I will explain it in accordance with that method. Secondly, regarding the general way of practicing and guarding meditation, according to the three terms of the three wise ones as stated by Lord Gampopa, firstly, the wise one who begins meditation is: having properly arranged the posture, as previously explained in the context of calm abiding, generating strong faith and aspiration from the perspective of seeing the qualities of samadhi, and entering after eliminating all the (500) afflictions of other minds. In the middle, the wise one who relies on experience is: correcting the faults of dullness and excitement, making the experience free from the moisture of continuous connection, and guarding the essence of the mind nakedly. Finally, the wise one who cuts off the continuation is: clear but short in duration, to be cultivated again and again.
