Even if you strive diligently, if you lack vigilance, faults will arise, and you will end up with the defilement of downfalls. Thieves without vigilance, following after the loss of mindfulness, even if they accumulate merit, will go to lower realms as if being robbed by thieves. It is like that. Therefore, those who possess such mindfulness and awareness will have conscientiousness. Its essence is: guarding the mind from all afflictive dharmas, and completely accomplishing all the virtues of the world and beyond. As it is said in the *Tathāgata's Secret Sūtra*: Furthermore, conscientiousness is (486) taming one's own mind, guarding the minds of others, eliminating the mind that delights in afflictions, and entering into the mind that delights in the Dharma. From there, until: Unreasonable thoughts do not arise, and thoughts of all sinful and unwholesome dharmas do not arise, this is called conscientiousness. And as it says in the *Moon Lamp Sūtra*: Morality, learning, generosity, and patience, and all that is called virtuous Dharma, the root of all of these is conscientiousness, the Sugata said that it is the means of obtaining treasure. And as it says in the *Friendly Epistle*: Stinginess, deceit, attachment, and laziness, as well as pride, desire, and hatred, and arrogance arising from lineage, beauty, learning, youth, and great power, regard them as enemies. Vigilance is the place of nectar, while carelessness is the place of bondage, this is the teaching of the Muni. Therefore, in order to increase your virtuous Dharma, (487) please always be conscientious with reverence. It is like that. Relying on these methods, the Kagyu lineage masters, according to their teachings, say: Renunciation is the foot or master of meditation, devotion is the head or enhancement of meditation, mindfulness is the guard or main practice of meditation, the activity of meditation is loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta, and the armor of meditation is shame and embarrassment. Having understood these, abandon distraction, calm the mind, and focus diligently on meditation practice, which is of utmost importance. The third point is: Among the three, hearing, thinking, and meditating, especially when cultivating meditation, mindfulness is very important, so you must concentrate your mind and maintain mindfulness. If mindfulness is lost, then the very meaning of what is to be accomplished will be lost. It is like that.

Furthermore, in the Shesping it says: "The mindfulness belonging to the powerful body of the Sugata, this single path of progression (488) has been shown to be near. Strive for it and manifestly protect it, for if mindfulness is lost, all dharmas will be destroyed." So it is said. Je Gampopa said: "Meditate on the view with the king of mindfulness, unscattered. Strive for that which does not change due to various conditions. Do not seek anything other than the stream of unscattered mindfulness." So it is said. Je Phagmo Drupa said: "If this spark of mindfulness is not made, these four demonic thieves will circle around. There is a danger of losing the jewel of wisdom." So it is said. Je Drikungpa said: "The main path of the Buddhas of the three times is constant, uninterrupted mindfulness. If you do not know unscattered mindfulness, the babbling of body and speech is meaningless." So it is said. Mindfulness is also explained as having two types: mindfulness that leads to mindfulness, and mindfulness that focuses on mindfulness. The former is merely the generation of desire to remember the object of mindfulness. The latter is the actual mindfulness that remembers the object of mindfulness and does not stray from it. For beginners, these two (489) have slightly different aspects of before and after, but once accustomed, they arise as one. Such mindfulness is also explained by the Kagyu tradition as having two types: mindfulness with effort and mindfulness without effort. The former includes: Atas mindfulness or clinging mindfulness, and emptiness grasping mindfulness or recognition mindfulness. The latter includes: the union of true mindfulness and mindfulness beyond mind or thought. The first of these four requires placing the mind on the basis of experience and certainty, clinging to it with mindfulness. The second is to recognize all that arises and appears as emptiness, and to maintain the continuity of the certainty of that decision. The third is when even subtle efforts and grasping of certainty are liberated into wisdom, and the realization of union arises spontaneously without relying on mindfulness. The fourth is when all thoughts, such as the object of meditation and the meditator, are purified into the nature of great primordial equality, (490) becoming constant, uninterrupted mindfulness, transformed into the wheel of wisdom. The wise and accomplished Orgyenpa considers these four mindfulnesses to be combined with the four yogas, dividing them into twelve yogas, but considers it to be the way of increasing the four mindfulnesses.
