In the Ornament of the Earth it says: "On the path of seeing the branch of ascertainment, and on the paths of familiarization, repeatedly applying the mind, meeting and determining, is the path of meditation." Thus it is. Secondly, in order to meditate in this way, one must meditate by abiding in mindfulness, awareness, and conscientiousness at all times. As it says in the Sutra: "If you always rely on mindfulness and awareness, the signs of wrong thoughts cannot approach." And as it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "For those who wish to protect their minds, mindfulness and awareness are, even if life is at stake, protect them, I advise you thus." Thus it is. Mindfulness is thinking without forgetting the object to be accomplished, but here it is, as asked in the Crown Jewel: "Among them, with what mindfulness do all defilements not arise? With what mindfulness does the opportunity for all demonic activities not open? With what mindfulness does one not go to evil paths and wrong paths? With what door-like mindfulness does the opportunity for all non-virtues of mind and mental factors not open? This is called true mindfulness." Thus, it is a mental action that protects against non-virtue and connects with virtue. There are many distinctions in it, as it says in the Sutra of the Collection of Righteousness: "Among them, what is the path of right mindfulness to enlightenment? With what mindfulness will one understand all dharmas? To understand the dharmas individually? To examine the dharmas? To go everywhere to the dharmas? To think about the dharmas? To contemplate the dharmas? With that mindfulness, one will understand the self-character of the dharma." Thus, the mindfulness of the limb of enlightenment and its synonyms are also spoken of. Also, as it says in the Sutra Asked by Inexhaustible Intelligence: "Among them, what is right mindfulness? What is mindfulness that is very close to abiding? Unwavering, upright, without deceit, seeing the faults of samsara, leading to the path of nirvana, not forgetting mindfulness, right conduct, and the noble path, this is called right mindfulness." Thus, the distinction of the right mindfulness of the noble path is spoken of. Also, in the Collection of Righteousness: "Son of good family, what is the mindfulness of the Bodhisattva's close abiding? What is mindfulness? What is the place of mindfulness?"

In response to what was said earlier, sons of the lineage, bodhisattvas know that all dharmas are unborn, and this is mindfulness. Bodhisattvas have the aspiration of the wisdom of non-arising (483), and their mindfulness is also completely subdued by the wisdom of non-arising. Mindfulness that is unwavering in all times and places, immovable, profound, and immeasurable, is difficult for worldly beings, hearers, and solitary realizers to understand. Thus, many names such as the mindfulness close placement of bodhisattvas have been proclaimed. Here, in the present context, as the Four Hundred says: When an object that has been seen no longer appears, and if it cannot be determined again by the mind, what is called mindfulness is only a conceptualization of a false meaning. This refers to the mindfulness of looking at the past. Dharmakirti says: Other than the confusion of the senses, the senses are the connectors, having different, indescribable confusions, this is mindfulness, which is also a conceptualization. This refers to the mindfulness of connecting and grasping the meaning of before and after. In the Higher Abhidharma it is said: What is mindfulness? It is when the mind does not forget familiar objects, the mind (484) has the function of not being distracted. This refers to the special mindfulness of focusing on the object of focus. Of the above, the first two are mindfulness with conceptualization, and although they are necessary when distinguishing and analyzing, they are what is to be abandoned in calm abiding. The latter is the mindfulness spoken of for cultivating calm abiding, so it is the mindfulness that is necessary for meditation. Relying on it, by observing the actions of body, speech, and mind, one can generate the wisdom that distinguishes what to adopt and abandon. The Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior says: When mindfulness, from the gate of the mind, turns to abide for the sake of guarding, at that time, wisdom becomes like light. Its characteristic is also: For the state of body and mind, one should repeatedly examine, in short, that alone is the characteristic of guarding wisdom. Even so, here it is mainly about guarding the state of mind and increasing its strength, and it is very important to rely on such mindfulness and wisdom to properly adopt and abandon actions (485). The fault of not having such mindfulness and wisdom is, as the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior says: Those who have a mind without wisdom, their hearing, thinking, and meditation, like a leaking vase, cannot maintain mindfulness. Those who have hearing and faith,
