Regarding causing subsequent thoughts to arise, it is also emphasized that previous thoughts are emphasized, and it is considered that meditation will be deeper. Like that, among those thoughts, here, for the sake of beginners, continuous recollection is mainly emphasized. Afterwards, once it is determined that all phenomena that appear are unborn, mere recollection is sufficient. And for these two, there are times when great effort is needed, and times when thoughts arise naturally. For the former, Lord Götsangpa considered that one should grasp thoughts firmly, like using "so" to lure birds and fish, and stack thoughts on top of thoughts, that is, one should generate thoughts again before the power of the previous thoughts is exhausted. (491) So, what is the meaning of emphasizing the importance of mindfulness here, and of the many mentions in the scriptures and their commentaries of "no mindfulness and no attention"? That is because it is said when the mind is in a state of equipoise. At that time, the meaning of "no mindfulness," as asked by Lodrö Gyatso: "Without mindfulness and without attention, previously abide in mindfulness." And in the Sutra of the Holy Walking Buddha, it was asked: "Manjushri, what is it like to abide in mindfulness?" He replied: "All dharmas are without mindfulness, without attention." Similarly, "Without mindfulness and without attention, meditate on the recollection of the Buddha." And so on, there are very many instances of mentioning that without mindfulness and without attention are mindfulness and recollection. That is also, as mentioned above, in the distinctions of correct mindfulness, it is mentioned that mindfulness, (492) immovability, uprightness, absence of deceit, recollection, gentleness, and not forgetting the path. At that time, it is called "no mindfulness" in order to pacify the distraction of deceptive thoughts and discriminations, but it is not considered to be a state of no mindfulness such as forgetting, the delusion of being lost, fainting, and sleep. Similarly, the meaning of non-attention is also, in the Dharani Entering Non-Discrimination, it says: "Son of good family, by what cause is the realm of non-discrimination called non-attention? If one truly transcends the signs of all discriminations, then it is taken, and they will show the true transcendence of all discriminations, by the word of non-attention." And, meditation

In the sequence, from the form that enters into non-discrimination, one abandons the characteristics of form, etc., through non-attention. What is said (493) is that, when examined with wisdom, it is intended as non-attention to what is unobtainable. However, it is not merely the absence of attention. As it is said, abandoning the movement of the mind and separating from all discriminations is referred to as the term 'non-attention.' However, it is not that the function of the mind is completely absent. As the great Brahmin said, 'The natural mind dwells as one, with the yogi.' As Shavara said, 'When the natural mind has been cultivated.' So it is. Furthermore, in the Śrāvakabhūmi: 'In order to not be inclined towards all characteristics and to be without distraction, from the beginning, by applying closely, one makes it without memory and without attention.' Thus, the meaning of without memory and without attention is explained as without characteristics and without discrimination. Also, in the Bhāvanākrama III: 'If merely the absence of memory and the absence of attention are called the absence of memory and the absence of attention, then at that time it is necessary to examine in what way these two are absent. Absence also does not become a cause, by what does it become non-discriminatory from the absence of characteristics and the absence of attention? If it becomes non-discriminatory merely by this, then fainting will also enter into non-discriminatory nature due to the absence of memory and the absence of attention.' Thus, summarizing the meaning of many explanations, initially, the stream of non-discriminatory wisdom obtained from examination with wisdom is said to be the meaning of without memory and without attention in order to maintain it. In the Bhāvanākrama III: 'Therefore, it should be regarded that the absence of memory and the absence of attention that arise from the sacred Dharma are preceded by correct individual attention, because correct individual attention itself can cause the absence of memory and the absence of attention (495), otherwise it cannot. Thus, when a yogi examines with correct wisdom, at any time he does not see any Dharma arising in the three times, how is he then entering into the absence of memory and the absence of attention? By entering into that, he will realize emptiness.'
