If there is such a thing as "both existence and non-existence," then it should be reasonable to have something that is the opposite of that, "neither existence nor non-existence." However, since it is impossible to be both "existence and non-existence," it is also impossible to have "neither existence nor non-existence" in relation to it. Therefore, (368) in the state of equipoise, one does not even accept that the vase and all extremes of elaboration are absent, because when analyzed with reason, the cessation of elaboration itself does not exist, since its opposite, elaboration, does not exist. If this is done, then the proclamations of view being free from acceptance, meditation being free from mental engagement, and conduct being free from acceptance and rejection will arise. Among these, conduct being free from acceptance and rejection is during the time of equipoise, but in the post-equipoise state, acceptance and rejection must be done. What is the use of saying more here? If one is a Madhyamika, then one should not accept any side of emptiness and non-emptiness, arising and abiding and ceasing, conditioned and things and non-things, self and non-self, etc., as stated in the great Madhyamika treatises. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: "If there is a little non-emptiness, then there will be a little emptiness. If there is no little non-emptiness, where is there emptiness?" And: "Arising and abiding and ceasing, since they are not established, there is no conditioned. (369) Since the conditioned is not fully established, how is the unconditioned established?" And: "If things are not established, then non-things will not be established. Things that have changed into something else, people say are non-things. Those who view emptiness, it is said that they cannot be established." And in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: "As long as the mind is disturbed, that is the realm of demons." And: "One is not liberated by existence, nor is one liberated from this existence by non-existence. By fully knowing existence and non-existence, the great being is liberated." And: "Not seeing reality, one is proud of the world and nirvana. Seeing reality, one is not proud of the world and nirvana." And in the Explanation of the Mind of Enlightenment: "Wherever conceptual thoughts appear, how can emptiness be there? The mind that apprehends and the object apprehended, the Thus-Gone Ones have not seen. Where there is something to be examined

There is conceptualization. There is no Bodhi there. Thus it is said. Unborn and emptiness, and selflessness, are called emptiness. Meditating on an inferior self-nature, that is not meditating on that. Thus it is said. In the Ratnavali it says: Thus, self and selflessness, are not truly objects. The views of self and selflessness, are therefore refuted by the Great Sage. Thus it is said. Acharya Aryadeva also said: If there is no non-emptiness, from where does emptiness arise? How can an antidote arise without one? Thus it is said. In the Two Truths it also says: Because there is no object to be negated, where is it clear that there is no negation? Thus it is said. The self-nature of what is examined, how can it become unexamined by being negated? Thus it is said. In the Bodhicharyavatara it says: Therefore, whatever is a false entity, its non-entity is clearly false. Thus it is said. In the Madhyamakalankara it says: Because birth and so on are negated, non-birth and so on are impossible. For the sound of negation without an object, combination is not good. Thus it is said. Again, in the Precious Garland it says: Holding that the world exists or does not exist, that is ignorance, and if there is ignorance, there will be no liberation. One who believes in non-existence (371) goes to the lower realms, and one who believes in existence goes to the happy realms. In order to fully understand as it is, one will be liberated by not relying on the two. Because of fully understanding as it is, not desiring existence and non-existence, therefore if one becomes a non-existent, why would one not become an existent? If existence is refuted, then in reality non-existence is established. Likewise, if non-existence is refuted, why is existence not established? In reality, one does not take vows or contemplate on non-existence, and for the sake of stable Bodhi, there is no mind, how can those be said to be non-existent? If one says that a person is the aggregates, and the world, the Samkhya, the owl chicks, and the naked ones, etc., if they perish, if they say they have transcended existence and non-existence, then ask. Therefore, the Buddhas have said that the teaching is immortal, transcending existence and non-existence, and say that it is profound, make it a hole of Dharma. Thus it is said. Again, in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning it says: The place where all faults arise, non-existence has already been completely refuted, by what reasoning should existence also be refuted, please listen. Thus it is said. Whoever has intelligence
