and non-existence. (372) Completely transcending and not abiding, those profound without object of focus, through conditions, meditate on the meaning as it is. Thus it is said. Also, in the Ornament it says: To say one exists and one does not exist, that is not it itself, nor is it destruction. Therefore, to say this exists and this does not exist, is merely speaking, not truly existing. For existence, non-existence, and existence and non-existence, to which there is no biased side, then even if the time is long, one cannot make accusations. Thus it is said. In the Ornament of the Middle Way it says: For existence, non-existence, and existence and non-existence, whatever does not affirm, then even with diligent effort, one cannot make any accusations. Thus it is said. In its self-commentary: For whatever side, whether it is existence, non-existence, existence and non-existence, or non-non-existence, one cannot make accusations, even for a long time one cannot speak. Thus, and so on, all the treatises of the Middle Way clearly explain the meaning of being free from all elaborations. To this, others say: Those treatises do not harm us in the slightest, because all phenomena are not existent in the ultimate truth, nor are they non-existent in the conventional truth. Some say: Existence is not true, non-existence (373) is also not true. Therefore, to speak according to the literal meaning has countless faults. For example, if one says the pot is not existent, then it becomes saying it is non-existent; if one says it is not non-existent, then it becomes saying it is existent. Similarly, if one says it is neither existence nor non-existence, and then says that what is neither existence nor non-existence is not, that is simply not understanding the true meaning of double negation, because this is admitting an endless collection of contradictions. If so, then saying the pot is neither existent nor non-existent, and to the debater who says the pot is existent and non-existent, you are saying the pot is non-existent, because you say the pot is not existent. Similarly, you are saying the pot is existent, because the Madhyamika says it is not non-existent. The three wheels of both the former and the latter are directly contradictory. Furthermore, saying the pot is not either existence or non-existence, and the debater who has not said it is either existence or non-existence, you are existent, because either existence or non-existence and not either are mutually exclusive contradictions (374). The sign is accepted. If accepted, then saying the pot is not either existence or non-existence
