Space and so on arose, and relying on that, the male and female faculties were formed. Relying on that, the white and red essences were formed within. Relying on that, the sun and moon were formed outside. From that, light and darkness arose. From that, attachment to pleasure and hatred of suffering, namely attachment and aversion, arose. From that, strife arose, rooted in feeling. All of that also arises from the power of desire and craving. These are the ways in which the Three-Possessed, Two-Possessed, and Strife-Possessed ages arose. As it is said in the Abhidharma Sutra: At that time, the great earth had earth-butter, with fragrance and taste in abundance. Those sentient beings smelled the fragrance and tasted it with the tips of their fingers. The more they tasted, the more they craved. Because of that, their bodies became heavy and their light diminished. Darkness appeared in the world, and the sun and moon appeared and disappeared with bright light. After that, corpses appeared and gradually disappeared. (176) As the body's desire increased, excrement and the male and female faculties also appeared. Sentient beings argued, saying, "I am long-lived and have a good complexion; you have a bad complexion." Thus, strife, desire, and suffering arose, and the earth-butter sank into the earth. After that, gardens of sprouts, and rice that grew without being sown, also gradually disappeared, giving rise to the thought, "This is mine," and when others took it, strife arose. Thus it is said. Thus, there are two ways of establishing the four ages: in terms of enjoyment and in terms of Dharma. Establishing in terms of enjoyment is the four great ages: dividing enjoyment into four parts, the age in which all parts are fully complete is called the Age of Perfection. Reducing one part is called the Three-Possessed Age. Reducing two parts is called the Two-Possessed Age. Reducing three parts is called the Age of Strife. Establishing in terms of Dharma is the four small ages: the age in which all aspects of the ten virtues are fully complete is called the Age of Perfection. Reducing one branch is called the Three-Possessed Age. Reducing two branches is called the Two-Possessed Age. Reducing three branches is called the Age of Strife, and all of these are the basis for practice in the Vajrayana. The sutra just quoted speaks from the perspective of the four great ages. This four small ages is also the number of years (177
