The four co-emergent ones constantly embrace, thus creating samsara. When dividing into the eight consciousnesses, the two minds are combined into one afflicted mind. Thus, if there is no distinction between the two minds, "The consciousness that immediately follows the cessation of the six, that consciousness is the mind." As it is said, the nature of the mind that immediately follows the cessation of the six consciousnesses is called the mind. (141) It is said that when the six consciousnesses arise and cease, the ability is established in the Alaya consciousness, and one should know the manner in which it dissolves into the Alaya consciousness and then arises again from it. If this is not known, then just as the ear consciousness arises from the cessation of the previous similar type of eye consciousness, one must accept that the causes and results are of different types. The mere cessation of the six is a negation, so there is the fault of having to accept that it arises from no cause, etc. Therefore, the previous mind is the one that arises from the Alaya consciousness and has the function of connecting and gathering the six consciousnesses, which is a well-spoken point that is not found elsewhere. Secondly, the order of the six consciousnesses and the five aggregates is shown: "Object and grasping appear as two, giving and taking from oneself to oneself. That mind turns outward, from the appearance of phenomena, the consciousness that grasps the meaning of the object arises. The feeling of taking and rejecting arises. From that comes the perception of grasping at signs. Conditioned phenomena appear elsewhere, and clinging establishes the aggregate of form." As it is said, how do the previously mentioned mind and consciousness arise like waves of water? The six objects, such as form, and the six consciousnesses that rely on the grasping faculties, (142) although there is no difference in meaning, due to the power of beginningless habitual tendencies, the consciousness of duality arises. The part of consciousness, the object itself gives and takes form from itself, and from the interdependent arising of the three, object, faculty, and consciousness, appearance arises. From that, the arising that spreads from that appearance to the object arises. Because it is connected with discrimination, it is able to see the meaning, so the attainment arises on the object. Thus, although there is no confusion in the self-nature of the moment of appearance of the six consciousnesses, continuing from that moment, from the appearance of the mind turning outward, the grasping of that object as meaning arises, and from that the six consciousnesses arise. This is the continuous flow of the seeds of the three, object, faculty, and consciousness, from the Alaya consciousness.

The power of mutual dependence and interconnection between cause and effect is inconceivable. As stated in the Vajrasekhara Sutra: "Seeds are the source of all dharmas, they are the nature of both inner and outer." The glorious Dignāga also said: "The nature of inner knowledge, whatever appears as the outer, that is the real meaning, it is the nature of consciousness, and that itself is the condition." In its commentary, it says: "Just as there is no external object, but it appears as an external object, only what is internal is the condition of the object of focus. Internal consciousness appears as an object and arises from it, because it possesses two qualities, therefore only what is internal is the condition of the object of focus." Furthermore, although they arise simultaneously, it is reasonable to be a condition, and because it bestows power, it is not contradictory to arise sequentially, and because power is also a sense faculty, it is not contradictory, in order to show these, it is said: "Because there is no confusion, it is a condition, because it bestows power, it is sequential, simultaneous action, whatever nature is also a sense faculty." And so on, it is explained in the examination of the object of focus. Through the dependent arising that distinguishes meaning, the process of forming the five aggregates is: the mind that was previously mentioned is the aggregate of consciousness; the movement of the mind that creates is the aggregate of formation; from this, the attainment of the aggregation of the root, object, and consciousness, from this experiencing the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and indifference, accepting the agreeable object, abandoning the disagreeable object, and being indifferent to the neutral object, from this arises attachment; from this, the conception arises of grasping the self and characteristics of that object as signs. (144) From that conception, the other things that appear as accumulated objects are distinguished and clung to, from this the aggregate of form is formed. Third, explaining the difference between cause and condition. Among the six causes and four conditions, the first is: "The five elements and the six consciousnesses are called causes by discrimination." Thus it is said. In the common vehicle's language, it is said: "The five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space, and the six elements of consciousness, are the causes of inner and outer phenomena, this is named by discrimination that agrees with the meaning." The nature of earth and so on is hardness and stability, the nature of water is wetness and moisture, the nature of fire is warmth and burning, the nature of wind is lightness and movement, the nature of space is emptiness and openness, these in sequence...
