Thus it is said. That mind which is beyond limitations and without partiality, is the very moment of awareness, from the appearance of its own nature unceasingly playing out. Although its own essence has not moved from emptiness, yet its nature or form appears clearly. That mind which is the inseparability of emptiness and clarity is the basis of all samsara and nirvana. Its form or mode of grasping is the collection of the fifty-one mental events of samsara (137), and mainly the eight consciousnesses, etc., which appear without ceasing in any way. That very mind appears as the three: mind, intellect, and consciousness in the state of samsara, and in the state of Buddhahood, it appears as the three kayas and the five wisdoms, etc. As it is said in the Praise of Dharmadhatu: When covered by the net of afflictions, it is called mind; when it is free from afflictions, it is called Buddha. Secondly, regarding how delusion occurs, here is explained the order of the alaya and the afflicted mind based on it, the six aggregates, and the five skandhas. Firstly, as it is said: That itself does not recognize itself, the movement of the acting mind, moves like a water wave. This means that the mind itself, which is pure from the beginning, does not recognize itself. What does not recognize? The very essence of the mind, although there is no duality of object and subject, it does not recognize due to the unceasing power that appears as duality. How does it not recognize? From the movement of the acting mind, the mind that appears as cause and condition (138), and the non-veridical conceptualization that, based on that, makes it afflicted, thus ignorance arises. From that, the karma of action is accumulated, thus samsara is accomplished. Therefore, the alaya-consciousness is the basis or cause of samsara, and the two minds are the condition. The way these two become cause and condition is that from the ocean of the alaya, the mind, like a wave moving from water, constantly moves and accumulates, thus samsara is accomplished. With these two minds in mind, in the Thirty Verses it is said: Abiding in that, it arises; focusing on that, it is called mind; consciousness is the nature of ego-clinging; obscured and not revealed; always accompanied by the four afflictions. Thus it is said.

E, the first mind arises from the Alaya-vijñana. When the other six consciousnesses arise and cease, their powers are stored in the Alaya-vijñana, hence it is called the consciousness of mind. Its nature, as stated in the Vijnaptimatrata-siddhi: "Closely connected with its own object, similar to the sense consciousness arising simultaneously with the object, the consciousness of mind produced by the immediately preceding cause." The meaning of what is said (139) refers to the manifest perception of the knowing mind. The second mind is the one that clings to the Alaya-vijñana and is constantly associated with the four afflictions such as clinging to self, and is called the afflicted mind. This mind never becomes completely pure, and all thoughts of ignorance, wrong views, and doubt arise from it. Furthermore, considering the first six consciousnesses as mind, and explaining them as non-existent in reality, all rely on the six consciousnesses of the Hinayana system, and do not understand the establishment of the eight consciousnesses of the Mahayana system. The distinction between these two minds is also explained in the Mahayana-samgraha, as stated in the sutra: "There are two types of mind. One is the mind that acts as the immediately preceding cause, becoming a place of existence, therefore called the mind immediately after the cessation of consciousness, which is the place where consciousness arises. The second is the afflicted mind, which is constantly associated with the four afflictions, namely the view of the perishable aggregate, pride in 'I', attachment to self, and ignorance. This is the place where consciousness is completely afflicted. Consciousness is produced by one place (140), while the second mind makes it afflicted. Because it can discern objects, it is consciousness. Because it is immediately preceding and clings to 'I', there are two types of mind." Thus it is said. Therefore, the root of all delusions in samsara is this afflicted mind, and it is important to know the difference that it does not exist in the state of cessation and exists in the state of non-perception. Therefore, the first mind is the place where the six consciousnesses arise from the Alaya-vijñana, and accompanied by white dharma, it becomes the cause of the qualities of separation from the Buddha; while the second mind is affliction, namely the view of the perishable aggregate, pride in 'I', attachment to self, and ignorance.
