That itself is Nirvana. Thus it is said. In the Vajra Tent it says: Apart from the precious mind, there is no Buddha and no sentient being. Thus it is said. The great Brahmin also said: Mind itself is the one seed of all. Thus it is said. Also in the Mother of the Conquerors it says: Mind is no-mind, the nature of mind is luminosity. And so forth, it is said much in the Sutras, Tantras, and Treatises, which refers to the pure mind. The mind that is not (127) pure is the Alaya-vijnana (store consciousness). In the Compendium of Abhidharma it says: The mind, aggregates, realms, and sources are all imbued with habits, the Alaya-vijnana is the seed of all. Thus it is said. This is embraced by the unreal, the completely conceptualized, the mind of the three realms and what arises from the mind, the root of all obscurations, which is to be destroyed by the wisdom of the Buddha. With this in mind, in the Lankavatara Sutra it says: O sons of the conquerors, these three realms are mind only. Thus it is said. Also in the Madhyantavibhaga it says: The unreal, the completely conceptualized, the mind and mental events are of the nature of the three realms. Thus it is said. The distinction between these two is explained by the teacher Vasubandhu in the commentary on the Thirty Verses: In that, the Alaya-vijnana is the result of all seeds, it is always endowed with contact and attention, feeling, perception, and intention. In that, feeling is neutral, it is unobscured and unspecified. It is like a constantly flowing river, in the state of Arhat it ceases. Thus it is said. In the Tathagatagarbha (128) it is also said to be Alaya, in order to know the difference between that and this, it is called Alaya-vijnana, which is to say the name of consciousness. Because the conditions are close, it is the cause of generating all the laws of samsara, in this respect it is called the seed of all. Contact, attention, feeling, perception, and intention, these five omnipresent ones, are always surrounding it. That feeling is neutral, its essence is unobscured, it is unspecified, like a constantly flowing river, the consciousness that relies on that faculty, with its retinue, all the seeds flow without interruption. The state of Arhat is where it ceases, which refers to the Mahayana Arhat, not the Shravaka Arhat.

Indeed, there exists the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna. Similarly, in the *Compendium on the Mahāyāna*, the ālaya is divided into two: the impure ālaya and the pure ālaya. Considering the impure aspect, as it is said: "The Blessed One spoke in the *Abhidharma Sutra*: 'The consciousness that is the basis, the seed of all dharmas, is called the ālaya-vijñāna.' Therefore, I have spoken of this ālaya-vijñāna to the noble ones." (129) Thus it is said. Why is it called ālaya-vijñāna? Because all afflicted dharmas of sentient beings are connected to the entity of the result, or it is also connected to them as the entity of the cause, therefore it is called ālaya-vijñāna. Or, sentient beings are connected to its nature, therefore it is called ālaya-vijñāna. It is also called the grasping consciousness, as in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "The grasping consciousness is very deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river. It is not permissible to conceive of it as self. This I have not taught to children." Like that. It is the cause of all sense faculties with form, and it becomes the place of grasping all bodies. Thus, as long as life lasts, it follows continuously, and until those five sense faculties with form are not destroyed, it holds them without abandoning them. And also, at the time of linking rebirth, it holds them and makes them manifest, therefore it holds the body. Therefore, it is called the grasping consciousness. Furthermore, there are three aspects of its characteristics: The own-characteristic of the ālaya-vijñāna (130) is that it relies on the habitual tendencies of all afflicted dharmas and possesses the ability to hold all seeds, therefore it is the nature of the cause of their arising. Its causal nature is that the ālaya-vijñāna, the consciousness that is the seed of all, always grasps the causal nature of those afflicted dharmas. The establishment of its nature as a result is that the ālaya-vijñāna arises from the habitual tendencies of all afflicted dharmas from beginningless time. Moreover, those habitual tendencies arise and cease together with white and black dharmas, but the mind arises as their cause, and from that
