Just as the cause of all defiled dharmas is the ālaya-vijñāna, all defiled dharmas are also established as the cause and condition of the ālaya-vijñāna. Because no other cause and condition is found. Although various habitual tendencies exist in various things in an unmanifest way, later they arise separately, appearing as different things, just like cloth transformed by dyes, (131) becoming various colors. This is the extremely profound dependent arising of self-nature differentiation. Other entering consciousnesses and the ālaya-vijñāna are regarded as the characteristics of cause and condition to each other. That is, one is the consciousness with a condition, the second is the one who closely utilizes. Close utilization and enjoyment, and the mental factors that cause its entry. As it appears from the Madhyānta-vibhāga. Such as these, are extensively taught. The Compendium of Mahāyāna states that the ālaya-vijñāna is said to be a special place for sentient beings, but it is not said to be the cause of nirvāṇa. To this, some say: If the ālaya-vijñāna is not the cause of nirvāṇa, then what produces the purified dharmas? All purified dharmas rely on the previously mentioned pure mind ālaya-jñāna, as stated in the Uttaratantra: Like a treasure and a fruit tree, these two lineages should be known, the beginningless self-nature abiding, and the truly obtained. It is hoped that the three bodies (132) of the Buddha will be obtained through these two lineages, the first body is the first. Similarly, in the Compendium of Mahāyāna, the part of the pure mind ālaya-jñāna is called the habitual tendency of hearing, which manifests from being nourished by the condition of hearing, and is the proximate cause of the dharmakāya of the bodhisattvas, and the cause of liberation for the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, which is said to be the antidote to the ālaya-vijñāna. As it is said, the all-seed ripening consciousness is the cause of all defilements, so how could its antidote, the seed of the supramundane mind, be possible?

The supramundane mind is unmixed, so it has no habitual tendencies. If there are no such habitual tendencies, then from where does the seed arise? It arises from the seed of the habitual tendencies of hearing, which is a similar cause of the extremely pure realm of dharma. What is the habitual tendency of hearing? Is it the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna, or is it not? If it is said to be the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna, then how can it be the seed of its antidote? If it is not its (133) nature, then where should one look for the seed-place of the habitual tendency of hearing? Having become the habitual tendency of hearing by relying on the enlightenment of the Buddha, it enters into whatever place, like water and milk, it enters into the vipāka-vijñāna in a co-emergent way, but that is not the ālaya-vijñāna, because it is the very seed of its antidote. Moreover, the habitual tendency changes from small to medium, and from that to large, because it possesses much hearing, thinking, and meditation. It is regarded as the seed of the dharmakāya, not being the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna, and although it is mundane, it is a similar cause of the extremely pure realm of dharma that is supramundane, so the supramundane mind becomes the seed of dharma. Even if the supramundane mind has not arisen, it is the antidote that purifies the afflictive obscurations, the lower realms, and all faults. It is in accordance with encountering the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The first (134) Bodhisattvas, even though they are mundane, gather it into the dharmakāya; the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas regard it as gathered into the fruit of liberation. It is not the ālaya-vijñāna, but is gathered by the dharmakāya and the liberation body, so as it gradually increases from small to medium to large, the vipāka-vijñāna decreases, the place becomes all kinds of things, and all seeds also disappear, because they have been completely abandoned. Thus, and so on, it is extensively taught. Thus, the two earlier and later citations from the Compendium of Mahāyāna, for the Lamdrepas who have not seen or heard

Some people think that if one admits the ālaya-vijñāna as the basis and lineage of everything, one will expose all one's own weaknesses, which is a shame for those scholars who are well-versed in the sūtras and tantras. There are also some who claim that the lineage of the master, the noble Nāgārjuna and his son, does not accept the ālaya-vijñāna. They deny the existence of the ālaya-vijñāna and believe that clinging to self is the root of saṃsāra. They have long abandoned the Dharma Abhidharma (135) sūtras and their commentary treatises. For those whose minds hate the Dharma, how can there be liberation? They take these words as guidance for practice. As the noble Nāgārjuna said in the Bodhicitta-vyākhyāna: Likewise, the ālaya-vijñāna, False but seemingly true, Coming and going, constantly changing, Always taking the three existences. You have not seen these words, that is the reason. Also, although the naturally abiding lineage is not newly produced, if one thinks that the increasing lineage is newly produced, that is not the case either. Because these eight consciousnesses also have two aspects: the aspect of consciousness and the aspect of wisdom. And that which abides in the nature of the stainless four wisdoms among them is the real increasing lineage. The white dharmas that rely on the Buddha's bodhi can also be called the increasing lineage. Because it destroys the consciousness aspect of the eight consciousnesses, when there is no confusion of consciousness, it obtains the name of the transformed wisdom. (136) The Madhyānta-vibhāga says: Like the water element, gold, and space, One expects to be completely pure as if pure. Therefore, the stainless aspect is wisdom, and the defiled aspect is consciousness. As it is said in the Nāmasaṃgīti: Transcending the nature of consciousness, Possessing the nature of non-dual wisdom. Here it is said: Having reached the other shore of the ocean of sūtras, Even if one is well-versed in the peak of the king of tantras, But who else is there besides me who can truly explain the meaning of this treatise? Secondly, the explanation of the aspect: From that uninterrupted play, The essence is empty and the nature is clear, The aspect appears unhindered in everything.
