Just as the sound of a great drum is produced in a place, when this Great Drum Sutra is proclaimed, in the manner of proclaiming the praise of the Three Jewels to beings, the secret of the Buddha is proclaimed, namely, the Tathagatagarbha is permanent, steadfast, peaceful, and everlasting. Thus, the secret of the Buddha is proclaimed. Also, from that very text, Light-protected, just as when the Tathagata attains Buddhahood, at the time of Nirvana, the basis is shown with the words "permanent, steadfast, peaceful, everlasting, self," and also in the time beyond the world, I will become like that, and the self that is accustomed to seeing the aggregates of the world will also be exhausted (105). Also, I, like a person living in the country of Champa, will first show the absence of self, and then after that, I will show the existence of self. I will also explain that Suchness with the self. Light-protected, therefore, one should know skillful means. Also, those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have attained the Nirvana that is peaceful and everlasting. Question: Bhagavan, how does one not fall into nihilism and eternalism? Answer: As long as sentient beings wander in samsara, I exist. The meaning of non-self is everlasting and permanent. If permanence is denied, then everlastingness will be diminished. Also, if afflictions are purified, then after that, the self will be found. That self will not be found by hearing such a sutra, but will be attained through skillful means, unflagging, unhesitating, intense diligence, and the three paths. Therefore, one should have faith in such sutras. Also, therefore, those who are not suitable for the great emptiness itself, speak of nihilism, and diminish and increase with eternalism, and when the talk of the Tathagatagarbha is taught, they will slander, and will abandon the talk of the Buddha's permanence, and that will not be completely Nirvana. Also, there, if there are beings to be tamed, it is said to look to the Bhagavan Shakyamuni Buddha coming into such beings, the Tathagata is permanent, steadfast,

Saying things like, "Look, this is real." And again, "The Tathagata is permanent, steadfast, peaceful, and real." Regarding these words, I have no doubt, and I think I have gained a good harvest. If one constantly remembers the Tathagata's qualities like these day and night, one will directly see the Tathagata's permanent and indestructible body. And again, "From now on, whoever holds, reads, recites this sutra, and proclaims it to others, knowing that the Tathagata is permanent, steadfast, peaceful, and real." In the Sutra of the Garland of Fingers (107), it also says, "Those who abandon the Tathagatagarbha are like the castrated bull of a Chandala king, unworthy to sit on a lion throne. Although all Buddhas search very diligently, they do not find the place where the Tathagata-dhatu arises. All sentient beings possess the unarisen Buddha-dhatu, which is adorned with excellent marks and signs. Although all Buddhas search very diligently themselves, they do not find the arising of the dhatu. Sentient beings possess the unarisen dhatu, the Buddha-dhatu, which is adorned with limitless excellent marks and signs. Although all Buddhas search very diligently themselves, they do not find the impermanence of the dhatu. All sentient beings possess the permanent dhatu, the Buddha-dhatu, which is adorned with limitless excellent marks and signs. Although all Buddhas search very diligently, they do not find the non-reality of the Tathagatagarbha. All sentient beings possess the real dhatu, the Buddha-dhatu, which is adorned with limitless excellent marks and signs. (108) And again, "All Buddhas have not found" means that the past Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also passed away without finding the fabrication of the Tathagatagarbha. The uncreated Buddha-dhatu, adorned with limitless excellent marks and signs, exists in all sentient beings. The present Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also diligently search for the fabrication of the Tathagatagarbha, but

not found. All sentient beings possess the uncreated Buddha-nature, adorned with immeasurable excellent marks and signs. Furthermore, if one believes that the Tathagata is of a permanent nature, that person is as rare as the Udumbara flower. After my Nirvana, if anyone hears this profound and vast Mahayana sutra and generates faith, know that they will not fall into the lower realms for hundreds of thousands of kalpas in the future. Thus, it is extensively taught. These sutras reveal the benefits of seeing that all sentient beings have the continuous, constant, and enduring Buddha-nature, and also prophesy the place of birth (109) for those who do not see it. As it is said in the Great Cloud Sutra: One will see the Tathagata as permanent, and having seen the Tathagata as constant and enduring, one will become the king who praises virtues. The body of the Tathagata is also enduring, and one will speak of it as enduring. One will also have a complete view of delighting in the peaceful nature of the Tathagata. The Tathagata is permanent, steadfast, enduring, and peaceful, and one will become the ocean of all kinds of views. Also, in the Garland Sutra: Bhagavan, that which transcends the realm of conditioned characteristics is permanent. That which is permanent is of an unfailing nature. Bhagavan, that which is of an unfailing nature is truth, permanence, and refuge. Thus, it is taught that all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha, endowed with unconditioned qualities. The venerable Maitreya and his disciples (110) also relied on these sutras and said that they should be understood as the sutras say, according to the words. Therefore, it is established that all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha in their continuum, and the benefits of knowing that it exists, the consequences of saying that it does not exist, and the place of birth are prophesied. Therefore, all those who believe that sentient beings do not have the Sugatagarbha, and those who believe that it is provisional, have deviated from the essence of the Buddha's teachings, so
