Explanation of the meaning of the eleven chapters. The first is: The stainless essence of the Victorious One is, Impure, impure and pure, And, In the order of utmost purity, sentient beings abide on the path, Likewise, the Tathagatas are in the order of four, Therefore, one should realize its meaning. Thus it is said. The connection of this treatise is: The nature of body and mind is explained. What is meant by saying that the body is the Sugata-garbha, the speech is the Sugata-garbha, and the mind is the Sugata-garbha? The stainless (97) essence of the Victorious One is, thus connected. This is the main subject matter of the Vajrayana, which is extremely difficult to understand, and is contained in four inconceivable states. It is the Sugata-garbha itself, which depends on the Bodhi of the Buddha. It is that which is established in this treatise and should be understood, the essence of the nature or state of all the Victorious Ones, which is naturally pure and never stained by sudden impurities, is called sentient beings in the state of being unstained by impurities. The state of being both impure and pure is called Bodhisattva abiding on the path. The state of being extremely pure is called Tathagatas, etc., which are applied in sequence to the three bases, paths, and fruits. The three continuums, as well as the state of the base object, the order of arising of the path, and the manner of manifestation of the fruit, are all because they are taught in the profound Sutra-Tantra treatises. One should realize the meaning of the Sugata-garbha. Among them, Vajra is the unchanging Buddha, and going into that path is the vehicle, that is, the (98) sons of the Victorious One enter, or the essence of the Buddha is the basis of all Samsara and Nirvana, so it is Vajrayana. What are the four inconceivable states? The essence has never been stained by impurities from the beginning, so it is naturally pure, but because it has the two obscurations of affliction and knowledge, it will not become a Buddha until the two obscurations are removed, which is the meaning of realm. From the beginning, it has been associated with all afflictions and has never been separated from impurities, but because the nature is not stained by impurities, the impurities are sudden, so it is not the meaning of the substantial Bodhi. Originally sentient beings

In all beings, the sixty-four qualities of the Buddha exist inseparably from the essence, but if they are not awakened by pure Dharma, they cannot function, which is the meaning of qualities. The spontaneous accomplishment of altruistic activities that accord with the faculties and abilities, without the conceptualization of agent and action, is the meaning of activity. These are states that cannot be conceived by speculative intellect. Relying on the enlightenment of the Buddha means: that which attains enlightenment is the lineage of the cause; that by which enlightenment is attained is the lineage of the path; that in which enlightenment is attained is the lineage of the result, which is relying on the very essence. From which sutra, tantra, or treatise (99) is this principle taught? It is from the Great Compassion Sutra. Son of good family, it is like a skilled gem cutter who knows well how to refine gems. He takes an unrefined precious gem from a mine of precious gems, soaks it in strong salt water, and refines it with a strand of hair. Not stopping his effort there, he then soaks it in thick food juice and refines it with a woolen cloth. Not stopping his effort there, he then soaks it in potent medicinal juice and refines it with thin gauze. Having completely refined it, it is called a great kind of beryl, free from impurities. Son of good family, likewise, the Tathagata, knowing the realm of sentient beings that is not completely refined, causes sentient beings in samsara to become weary with the words of impermanence, suffering, selflessness, impurity, and disillusionment, and thus introduces them to the Vinaya of the noble ones. But the Tathagata does not stop his effort there, and then with the words of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness (100), causes them to realize the nature of the Tathagata. The Tathagata does not stop his effort there, and then with the words of the irreversible wheel of Dharma, and the words of the complete purity of the three wheels, causes those sentient beings with various natures to enter the realm of the Tathagata. Once they have entered and realized the Dharma nature of the Tathagata, it is unsurpassed.
