Naho. The Chinese Abbot's shoes were left among the debating monks, (he said) my doctrine will appear at the end of the Tibetan doctrine. When going to China, the shoes were also left behind, (he said) now my doctrine will appear in Tibet. Citing this story (page 533) as an example, therefore, all the Mahamudra of today have not gone beyond the Chinese-style (Zen) Dzogchen. Thus it is written. To these, there are two kinds of answers, a common answer and a true answer. The first is: relying on seemingly logical arguments to refute profound meanings can only please those who are proficient in debate, but cannot satisfy yogis who have stabilized their minds. Because this reasoning is the same for all the instructions of Lamdre and its fruition, as well as the unimaginable stages of the speculators, the Mahamudra obtained under the stupa, the six branches of yoga, Niguma, the Six Dharmas of Naropa, the Five Stages, Shije, and Dzogchen. If you ask how they are the same, it is like this, when practicing those instructions, if you block the flow of the six consciousnesses and practice without even clarity of awareness, then afflictions belong to the category of dullness, which will become the cause of animals, etc., all the faults that you (page 534) have stated are the same. If you say that those instruction practitioners do not block the flow of the six consciousnesses, nor do they practice without clarity of awareness, so they are not the same. The second is the true answer: the Mahamudra practitioner also does not block the flow of the six consciousnesses, nor does he practice without clarity of awareness. The ancestor of the Mahamudra practitioners, Jetsun Milarepa, said: The path of a flying bird is comfortable in the sky, how would someone who has never flown know? For a mother who knows how to meditate, conceptual thought is comfortable, how would someone who has never meditated know? The fence of ignorance is dark, the thief of conceptual thought has a bald head, the mind, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, is in danger of being lost, now is the time to establish a guard of unforgetfulness. Because (Jetsun Milarepa) said that taking conceptual thought as a companion on the path requires a guard of mindfulness. The Unequaled Dagpo Lhaje also spoke of the Mahamudra coemergent union of

When explaining the meaning, it is said: "Appearance and Dharmakaya, these two are co-emergent, therefore, because of uniting them with instructions, it is named Co-emergent Union." And: "The nature of mind, co-emergent, is Dharmakaya; appearance, co-emergent, is the light of Dharmakaya." And: "This mind-nature, clear light emptiness, now I know is the view. This ordinary awareness, without distraction, now I know is meditation. This ungrasping awareness, free from support, now I know is experience. This arising of certainty in the mind, now I know is realization. This naturalness, relaxed and without clinging, now I know is conduct. This self-knowing essence, empty and clear, now I know is Dharmakaya. This beginningless, self-mind, completely pure, now I know is the fruit." And: "Altruistic compassion, without clinging, hold it tightly as the supreme method. This co-emergent consciousness, hold it tightly as wisdom. When certainty arises, it is that itself. This conceptual thought arising from characteristics, hold it tightly as Dharmakaya. If you experience, you see the essence. This appearance and sound of imputed habitual patterns, hold it tightly as ultimate truth. If stability is attained, you see the truth." Such things were said. Gompa Tsultrim Nyingpo also said: "This co-emergent mind-nature, if held tightly, is primordial. If loosened, it is free from elaboration. If realized simultaneously, it is Dharmakaya. Not wanting to abandon conceptual thought, and not deliberately cultivating non-conceptuality, is the nature of mind, free from duality. This clear, empty, naked awareness, guarding it without distraction is the instruction. If there is, offer to the Lama and the Three Jewels; if there is not, relax and rest the awareness." Father Dzamling Drakpa said that. Thus he spoke. Lord Jigten Sumgon, placing his left hand palm up and placing the fingers of his right hand on it, said to his disciples: "Children, children, in our lineage, mindfulness is what we count on, mindfulness, mindfulness," it is said that he spoke thus. Gyalwa Yang Gonpa also said: "Do not regard conceptual thought as a fault, and do not deliberately cultivate non-conceptuality, establish a boundary of mindfulness, and without correcting the mind, relax and abide, and meditate."
