Fools meditate on Mahamudra, mostly said to be the cause of animals, otherwise they are born in the formless realm, or fall into the Hearer's cessation. Even if that is a good practice, there is nothing superior to the Madhyamaka meditation. Without mentioning such faults, as a suitable metaphor for proving that to be a false Dharma, the story of the emergence of false Dharma by the Chinese Heshang was told, as it is said: The current Mahamudra, and the Dzogchen of the Chinese style, have two kinds of ascending and descending, gradual and sudden, except for changing the name, (527) there is no difference in meaning. The emergence of such a Dharma is also, Bodhisattva Shantarakshita, to King Trisong Detsen, as prophesied, it came true. After telling such stories, the analogy and meaning are combined as: After the external royal law declines, relying on the treatises of the Chinese Khenpo, relying only on the words, concealing that name, and changing the name to Mahamudra, the current Mahamudra, is mostly the Chinese Dharma. So it is said. The commentators on this, those who came later and claimed to be pure, said: Refuting the Mahamudra of other schools, determining the Mahamudra of one's own school, showing the Mahamudra of other schools as the Chinese way, showing the Mahamudra of one's own school as the Indian way. The first is: Mahamudra, etc., four verses, that is, the Mahamudra that is practiced today, mostly without knowing the meaning of the self-born wisdom arising from empowerment and the two stages as Mahamudra, as said in the yogi tantras, in the Sutras it is said: Whatever is conceived is unwholesome. Whatever is not (528) conceived is wholesome. And, all dharmas are without memory and cannot be conceived. Grasping the literal meaning of these words, blocking the proliferation of discriminating thoughts to external objects, and meditating on stopping the discriminating thoughts that keep emptiness blank. Analyzing this, after blocking the movement of the six consciousnesses, if one meditates without even a little clarity, it belongs to the near affliction of dullness, and it is said to be the cause of animals. After completely blocking the appearance of form, without desire for form.

Focusing on the sky, and blocking it, focusing on the consciousness with an object, and blocking it, focusing on having nothing to grasp, and transcending it, focusing on the thought that there is no coarse perception and no subtle concentration, these sequentially become the cause for arising in the four formless realms. Therefore, meditation is good. If one blocks the clinging to a personal self and meditates single-pointedly with the mind of definitely emerging from samsara, one will attain the nirvana of a Shravaka. Thus it is said. Furthermore, as an example of mistaking the Mahamudra doctrine for a false doctrine, the story of the emergence of the Chinese Hwashang's doctrine is told as follows: Regarding the Chinese Hwashang's doctrine. Since King Trisong Detsen was not fully convinced, he sent for Kamalashila to be invited. He arrived at Samye and set up a throne in Changchup Ling. The king sat above, Hwashang sat to the right, and Kamalashila sat to the left. The divine king sent each of them a garland of white flowers, saying: "Whoever wins the debate, the loser should offer the flower to him. You two should not be arrogant, but respect those who are steadfast in the Dharma." The Hwashang said: "Since the basis is already there, ask or answer first." The master Kamalashila said: "Please debate according to your intention." The Hwashang said: "Due to the power of good and non-virtuous deeds, one experiences the fruits of higher realms and lower realms, and all wandering in samsara is generated by the mind's conceptual thoughts. Whoever does not think of anything and does not do anything will be liberated from samsara. Therefore, (530) one should not think of anything. Practicing white dharmas such as generosity is taught to those who are mentally weak, without the karmic connection of white deeds, and with dull faculties. For those with sharp faculties who have previously trained their minds, just as neither white nor black clouds can obscure the sun, neither virtuous nor non-virtuous deeds can obscure them, so they do not think of anything, do not conceptualize anything, and do not contemplate anything, which is called non-objectification. This is like the tenth bhumi of the path of sudden enlightenment. Therefore, your doctrine is like a monkey climbing a tree, and is called gradual. Our doctrine is like a garuda descending from the sky to the top of a tree."
