It is called arising from below and sudden enlightenment. That's what they say. Thereupon, the teacher refuted, saying: First, your analogy is not appropriate. Does the garuda suddenly grow complete wings in the sky and then land on a treetop? Or does it build a nest on a rock and gradually grow wings before landing on a treetop? The former is impossible; if it's like the latter, it becomes an analogy for gradual enlightenment and cannot serve as an analogy for sudden enlightenment. At that time, the abbot couldn't answer the analogy and refuted the meaning, saying: You (531) not only have a wrong analogy, but also a confused meaning. Is meditating on non-conceptualization merely blocking one aspect of conceptualization, or blocking everything? If it's like the former, then sleep and fainting, etc., also become meditating on non-conceptualization, because only one aspect of conceptualization is blocked. If all conceptualizations must be blocked, then when you meditate on non-conceptualization, do you need to first generate the thought of meditating on non-conceptualization, or not? If you need to, then that itself is conceptualization, thus violating the vow of meditating on non-conceptualization. If you don't need to, then all sentient beings in the three realms will arise with meditation, because it arises even without first generating the thought of meditating. Like this, refuting with scripture and reasoning made the Chinese abbot lose confidence. The king said: If there is an answer, speak it now. The abbot said: Like hail falling on my head, I don't know how to answer. After that, the king offered flowers to the teacher, asked for forgiveness, and requested to act according to the Indian Dharma (532) that doesn't contradict scripture and reasoning. If you act according to the Chinese abbot's Dharma, you will be punished with penalties, he commanded sternly, and made three edicts, placing them in Do Kham, Tibet, and Gormadzo (དཀོར་མཛོད།). When the Chinese Heshang first heard that a pandita was being invited, he gathered his students and taught them debate, saying: Don't think about anything, just sleep, this kind of meditation document is called the Wheel of Meditative Sleeping. To indicate its key points, it's called the Answer of Meditation. To eliminate obstacles, it's called the Re-answer of Meditation. To establish with reasoning, it's called the Backing of View. To establish with scripture, it's called the Eighty Sources of Sutras, thus composing five treatises. Those were hidden as treasures and gradually spread. Because the Tibetan pith instruction Dharma lineage was scarce, it became mixed with those who claimed to be realized.
