From there flow four rivers. The Ganga flows from the mouth of an elephant, carrying silver sand. The Sita flows from the mouth of a lion, carrying diamond sand. The Sindhu flows from the mouth of a bull, carrying gold sand. The Pakshu flows from the mouth of a horse, carrying lapis lazuli. It is said that the width of each of their mouths is one yojana. These four rivers, in Matrus Lake, after circling seven times clockwise, are said to flow in four directions. All the spaces between them are filled with lotuses, water lilies, and so on, various sacred flowers, and various precious trees. For more detailed descriptions of these and so on, refer to the Avatamsaka Sutra. Someone said, "The present (469) Mapham (Lake Manasarovar) does not have those characteristics." This is a literal clinging to the meaning of the sutra. The following is a citation of the source of the sutra, and an explanation of its meaning. As it is said in the thirty-third chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra, the chapter on the ten samadhis, using various samadhis as examples, for example, from the location of the great dragon king Matrus Lake, four great rivers flow, they are unmixed, without turbidity, bright, clean, clear like the sky, without defilement. They also flow in ways of one, two, three, and four. For example, the Ganga flows from the mouth of an elephant. The Sita flows from the mouth of a lion. The Sindhu flows from the mouth of a bull king. The Pakshu flows from the mouth of a horse. They flow in this way from the four directions. The Ganga flows from the hole carrying silver sand, and stays in the silver sand. The Sita flows from the hole carrying diamond sand, and stays in the diamond sand. The Sindhu flows from the hole carrying gold sand (470), and stays in the gold sand. The Pakshu flows from the hole carrying lapis lazuli sand, and stays in the lapis lazuli sand. The great river Ganga flows in the form of heavenly silver. The great river Sita flows in the color of heavenly diamonds.

flows from the mouth. The great river Sindhu flows like heavenly gold. The great river Pakshu flows like heavenly blue lapis lazuli. All four of these great rivers flow from a hole in the mouth about one yojana in size. When they flow out, each one circles the great lake seven times and then flows in four directions, desiring to cling to the great lake of the great snow mountain. Thus, the islands between the great rivers that circle seven times to the right are also filled with heavenly jewels such as utpala flowers, lotuses, kumuda flowers, and pundarika flowers. Delightful, fragrant, beautifully adorned as borders, with bright colors like the colors of various jewels, bright and clear. (471) One image appears in another, with joyful radiance, pleasing to the eye, adorned with its nature and extremely pure land. They appear with bright colors, dispelling darkness and bringing light. They appear unforgettable and are adorned with extreme clarity. Flowers of various colors cover everywhere, with various petals, and the pistils also have various colors. The stamens appear in many colors, adorning it completely. The inside of that great lake and the center of the lake are fifty yojanas wide and fifty yojanas deep. Its bottom is paved with precious gravel, adorned with various colors and many kinds of jewels. Its banks are like nine layers of various jewels stacked around it. Its scent is like that of fine sandalwood, with various fragrances emanating from flowers of various colors. Covered with utpala flowers, lotuses, kumuda flowers, and pundarika flowers. Precious trees and flowers (472) bloom profusely, surrounding it all around. When the son of the sky, the sun, rises, the sun's rays fall on the jewels, gravel, flowers, sand along the rivers, the first mouths of the rivers, the lakes that circle to the right of the rivers, the trunks of the jewel trees, branches, leaves, and flowers, and then

At that time, even if each ray of light shines, it appears as if covered by a network of light, hundreds of thousands of billions of times, located in the source of various jewels. Everything seems to be gently touched by that pure light, so the great Anavatapta lake appears to possess all excellent forms. It is said. For example, the elephant king named "Possessing Strength" resides in the mountain called "Golden Mountain Side," which is a valley made of seven kinds of jewels, surrounded by seven layers of jewel walls, surrounded by seven layers of jewel tree fences, and covered by a jewel net. That elephant king "Possessing Strength" is entirely white like snow, possessing golden banners (473), adorned with gold ornaments, covered with golden pendants, covered with a golden net, strung with a net of bells, a net of all kinds of jewels covering the whole body, strung with necklaces of jewel bells, the seven limbs are very stable, possessing six tusks, pleasing, with no disharmony in form and color, beautiful and pure without causing weariness when viewed, possessing lineage, intelligent and doing as one wishes. That is the lord of the Thirty-Three, Indra, who disappears from the valley of the Golden Mountain Side, and comes to serve the king of the gods, Indra, in the Thirty-Three. It is said. From the elephant king "Possessing Strength" to the gods of the Thirty-Three all gather here. It is said. In the thirty-first chapter, the Tenth Ground chapter, it is said that the Snow Mountain is the source of all kinds of medicines, and the Fragrant Mountain is the source of all kinds of fragrances, and nothing more, without clearly stating the size, shape, direction, and (474) where it is located, etc. Similarly, the "Establishment of the World" and the "Treatise on the Arrangement of the World" also have detailed explanations. The meaning of these scriptures is this: because the Anavatapta lake mentioned in the Avatamsaka Sutra, and the layout and characteristics of the four great rivers flowing from it, are all explained in the Ten Samadhi chapter of that sutra.
