‘The so-called ‘lamp’ is like a lamp inside a vase, its light not shining outwards, not illuminating the surroundings, and not benefiting beings in any way. Similarly, the Tathagatagarbha (Essence of the Thus-Gone One), though possessing limitless marks and signs (lakshana-vyanjana), seems to be of no benefit to beings. When the vase breaks and the light of the lamp naturally appears, benefiting beings, it is like this: in the vase of samsara (cyclic existence), filled with afflictions, the light of the Tathagatagarbha shines like a lamp. When the afflictions of samsara are exhausted, it is like the lamp appearing when the vase breaks, and the Thus-Gone One will benefit beings. Through these four reasons, I realize that I have the sattvadhatu (element of beings), and similarly, all beings have it as well.’ etc. Some people want to seek the ‘self’ (atman), and they think like this: ‘Let me first seek my afflictions, my beginning and end.’ Can they find it?’ The Buddha replied: ‘Bhagavan, they cannot.’ ‘If the afflictions are purified, can the self be found afterwards?’ etc. Similarly, in the Śrīmālādevī Siṃhanāda Sūtra (Lion's Roar of Queen Śrīmālā Sutra) it is also said: ‘Bhagavan, the Tathagatagarbha is not a self (atman), not a being (sattva), not a life (jiva), not a person (pudgala). Bhagavan, the Tathagatagarbha is not the realm of those beings who have fallen into the view of a real self (satkayadrishti), not the realm of those beings who are deluded by inverted views (viparyasa), and not the realm of those beings whose minds are distracted from emptiness (sunyata). Bhagavan, the Tathagatagarbha is the essence of the supreme dharmadhatu (realm of phenomena), the essence of the dharmakaya (body of truth), the essence of the dharma that transcends the world, and the essence of the dharma that is naturally pure. Bhagavan, the Tathagatagarbha is naturally pure, but is defiled by adventitious, adventitious afflictions. This is the realm of the Thus-Gone One, it is inconceivable.’ etc., as extensively explained in the sutra. Although the Tathagatagarbha exists, beings do not see it because it is obscured by the faults of beings. If the Tathagatagarbha did not exist, then the ultimate truth (paramarthasatya) would also not exist, because they are one and the same. This is not possible. The Ratnamegha Sutra (Cloud of Jewels Sutra) says: ‘Noble son, whether the Tathagatas appear or not, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even if unborn, it does not perish. Son of good family! Therefore, Bodhisattvas shave their hair and beards, don the robes of a renunciate, and with faith, they renounce their homes and go forth into homelessness. Having gone forth, they strive diligently, as if their head or clothes were on fire, in order to attain this Dharma. Son of good family! If the ultimate truth did not exist, then the practice of pure conduct would be meaningless, and the appearance of the Tathāgata would also be meaningless. Because the ultimate truth exists, therefore Bodhisattvas are called those who are skilled in the ultimate truth.' Thus it is said. Similarly, in the *Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra*: 'Furthermore, Mañjuśrī! People churn milk because they recognize that there is butter in milk. Why do people not churn water? Because there is no substance. Similarly, Mañjuśrī! Because there is the *Tathāgatagarbha* (如来藏,tathāgatagarbha, tathāgatagarbha,Womb of the Tathagata), people observe moral discipline and practice pure conduct. Furthermore, Mañjuśrī! A person who desires gold, with discernment, digs into rock. Why does he not dig into wood? Because there is a vein of gold in the rock, he digs into the rock, but he does not dig into wood because there is no gold. Similarly, Mañjuśrī! People with discernment, recognizing that there is a *dhātu* (界,dhātu,dhātu,element, realm), think, 'I will become a Buddha,' and therefore observe moral discipline and practice pure conduct. Furthermore, Mañjuśrī! If there were no *dhātu*, then the practice of pure conduct would be meaningless. Even if one churned water for millions of years, oil would not arise. Similarly, if there were no *dhātu* of self, then attachment to self, the practice of pure conduct, and moral discipline would be meaningless.' And so forth. Also, in the *Śrīmālādevī Siṃhanāda Sūtra*: 'Bhagavan! If the *Tathāgatagarbha* did not exist, then there would be no aversion to suffering, and there would be no desire, pursuit, or aspiration for *nirvāṇa* (涅槃).’ And so forth, many faults are spoken of for those who believe that the ultimate truth, the *Tathāgatagarbha*, does not exist, and many qualities are spoken of for those who realize that it does exist. Therefore, one should read and listen to the extensive *Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra*, the *Mahābherī Sūtra*, the *Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra*, and other profound final turning of the wheel *sūtras*, as well as the profound *tantra* (密续) sections, and thereby develop certainty in the *Tathāgatagarbha*. If one does not do so, immeasurable great faults will occur, because in the *Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra* it says: 'Those beings who previously became animals, copulated with their own mothers, and whose minds were intoxicated, are still sleeping.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
