Just as one gradually examines something, thinking that it is not all the same, and then sees that it is a tiny creature, similarly, Bodhisattvas who have attained the ten bhūmis (ten grounds) see with their own wisdom that the tathāgatagarbha (Buddha-nature) exists in their own bodies, and they see that such a tathāgatagarbha is infinite. Therefore, entering into the tathāgatagarbha is very difficult. Those who, like burning and blazing, give up their own lives in the world to become teachers are very rare and beneficial. I will teach the tathāgatagarbha to those Bodhisattvas, but not to others. Sentient beings are the tathāgata. For example, just as one who possesses a divine eye is not obstructed within. When a child with a fleshy eye follows the path of a bird flying in the sky, can the child with the fleshy eye see the path of the bird in the sky? The venerable Aniruddha (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his foremost divine eye) sees it clearly. Similarly, a person with a fleshy eye also follows the venerable one with great faith. Just like a child with a fleshy eye, the Śrāvakas (hearers, practitioners of Hinayana Buddhism) and Pratyekabuddhas (solitary realizers, practitioners who attain enlightenment on their own without a teacher) believe in the teachings of all the sūtras (discourses), and know that the tathāgatagarbha exists, but how can they truly see the nature of the realm of the tathāgata? If the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not rely on others, they are like blind people, how can they believe? 'It has never happened before, this land has become four flavors.' I have heard from other past perfectly enlightened Buddhas that those sentient beings who have tasted the four flavors are still eating the food of children. When they have enjoyed the delicious food for a long time, sentient beings are still unable to give it up. Similarly, those sentient beings who have meditated on and increased the tathāgatagarbha in the presence of many past perfectly enlightened Buddhas still believe in the tathāgatagarbha. These sentient beings have meditated for a long time and serve the tathāgata, not others. In the future, those sentient beings who teach the tathāgatagarbha and believe in it are not others, they are like eating the food of the sons of the tathāgata, serving the tathāgata. etc. Also in the Mahābherīharaka-sūtra (Sutra of the Great Drum), 'Kāśyapa (one of the Buddha's disciples)!' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These four examples in the realm of sentient beings are metaphors for the cause and reason of obscuration. What are the four? Eyes that are blurred as if covered by a yellow or blue film, like the moon covered by clouds, like digging a well, and like a lamp inside a vase. These four are the cause and reason for 'having the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏, Tathāgatagarbha, tathāgatagarbha, Buddha-nature)'. These causes and reasons explain that all sentient beings and living creatures have the Buddha-nature, which appears adorned with limitless excellent marks and signs, and that this Buddha-nature enables sentient beings to attain Nirvana. Among them, 'blurred eyes' refers to being obscured by a yellow or blue film, which can be cured. Until a doctor is found, the eyes will remain blind, but once a doctor is found, sight will be quickly restored. Similarly, the Tathagatagarbha covered by layers of afflictions, as long as the Shravakas (声闻, Śrāvaka, śrāvaka, Hearers) and Pratyekabuddhas (缘觉, Pratyekabuddha, pratyekabuddha, Solitary Realizers) are satisfied, will remain in a state of 'non-self'. When they rejoice in the Buddhas, they will become 'self' and become objects that can be practiced. Just as that person's eye disease is the blurring caused by a yellow or blue film, afflictions should be viewed in the same way. Therefore, the Tathagatagarbha, like the eyes, is truly existent. 'The moon covered by clouds' means that just as the full moon is obscured by thick clouds, similarly, the Tathagatagarbha covered by layers of afflictions cannot appear. When the clouds of afflictions dissipate, the Tathagatagarbha will appear like the full moon. 'Digging a well' means that, for example, when a person digs a well, whenever dry soil is dug, he thinks that the water is still far away. When moist soil is dug, he knows that the water is near. When water is reached, it means that the digging work is completed. Similarly, Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas make the Tathagatas happy and dig up afflictions by practicing the Dharma. By digging, they can find the Tathagatagarbha like finding water. 'The lamp inside a vase' refers to... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
