Also, in the *Compendium on Perfect Reality Sutra*, it says: 'Suchness is truth, and all other dharmas besides suchness are false. The essence of truth is suchness, and the suchness of suchness is called the Tathagata's complete Nirvana. The ultimate limit is without elaboration, and other dharmas are of the nature of elaboration; because they are equal to the ultimate limit, it is called the Tathagata's complete Nirvana. Non-arising is true, and other dharmas such as arising are untrue, inverted, false, and of a deceptive nature. The Tathagata is not false or of a deceptive nature; the essence of truth is called the Tathagata's complete Nirvana. Non-reality is manifest activity, but in reality there is no manifest activity. Reality is the Dharmakaya (法身,Dharmakāya,Dharmakāya,Body of Dharma) of the Tathagata, and the unconditioned is called complete Nirvana,' and so on. Furthermore, to listen to these ultimate, unique, and exceptionally profound sutras, the disciples must have pure vessels. As it is said in the *Great Drum Sutra*: 'Ananda, this sutra is extremely difficult to obtain. Ananda, this great drum is like finding an *udumbara* flower (优昙婆罗花,udumbara, udumbara, auspicious flower) in the world.' (Ananda) asked: 'Bhagavan, what is this? Is it not the nature of all Buddhas, the Bhagavat?' The Bhagavan said: 'This is indeed the nature of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, future, and present.' And: 'Ananda, this is profound and difficult to understand, difficult to believe and have faith in; it is the secret of the Buddhas.' And: 'Ananda, therefore, this sutra called *The Great Drum*, even you, Ananda, do not understand.' Why is that? 'Ananda, those of the Hearer (声闻,Śrāvaka,Shravaka, one who hears the teachings) and Solitary Realizer (缘觉,Pratyekabuddha,Pratyekabuddha, one who realizes alone) vehicles will not believe in this Dharma-door sutra.' And: 'Good Protector, those sentient beings who are not like empty husks will hear this sutra called *The Great Drum*.' And: 'Good Protector, although not all in this assembly are virtuous and upholders of the precepts, are they skilled in the meaning of what is intended?' (Good Protector) asked: 'Bhagavan, what is meant by 'meaning'?' (The Bhagavan) said: 'Good Protector, what is meant by 'meaning' is the complete Nirvana of the Tathagata.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Past' means that the Tathagata (如来,Tathāgata, Thus-Gone One) is eternal, steadfast, peaceful, and everlasting. Even though he enters Nirvana, he does not decay. This sutra is called 'words of intent'. O Kasyapa (持戒,Kāśyapa, One who holds precepts)! The sutras that contradict this one must be proven with hundreds of thousands of reasons to be the cause of hell for sentient beings. O Kasyapa! Therefore, you should temporarily understand this assembly!' Then, for beings with small minds, those of the Sravaka (声闻,Śrāvaka, Hearer) and Pratyekabuddha (缘觉,Pratyekabuddha, Solitary Buddha) vehicles, and Bodhisattvas (菩萨,Bodhisattva, Enlightenment Being) who have newly entered the Mahayana (大乘,Mahāyāna, Great Vehicle), even though the Blessed One has entered Nirvana, they cannot comprehend the teaching that 'I am eternal, steadfast, peaceful, and everlasting,' and therefore they abandon it. Why? Because they have long been accustomed to the view of emptiness, the view of decay, and are focused on meditation. When these inferior beings hear this pure sutra, they become frightened. From the ten directions, those excellent Sravakas, practitioners of the Pratyekabuddha vehicle, and practitioners who have newly entered the Bodhisattva vehicle, no matter how many gather together, one-tenth, one-hundredth, one-thousandth, one hundred-thousandth, one millionth, or even an immeasurable fraction of them will gather together. What kind of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (菩萨摩诃萨,Bodhisattva-mahāsattva, Great Being Bodhisattva) are they? They all desire the Dharma of the Tathagata, they all hold the sutras of the Tathagatagarbha (如来藏,Tathāgatagarbha, Womb of the Thus-Gone One), they all proclaim the benefits of the Tathagatagarbha, they all desire the eternity of the Buddha, they are all proficient in 'words of intent', they all proclaim the sutras of 'definitive meaning', they are able to endure, they all strive to cut off the evil deeds of those who break the precepts and benefit them, they are extremely respectful to the Tathagata, they have great faith in the Mahayana, and they do not look down upon the Sravaka and Pratyekabuddha vehicles. Having abandoned such a supreme and vast sutra, they possess wisdom and do not proclaim other sutras, because it teaches the eternity of the Buddha and the existence of the Tathagatagarbha, and they constantly proclaim it without abandoning it. It is steadfast, and although it is seen as empty by the 'view of the aggregates', it is not truly empty, and all compounded phenomena are empty by nature.
