Even taking seven steps towards a monastery brings the fortune of a long-lasting lineage. The sutra says, 'Even if one takes seven steps thinking of a monastery, one will become a noble being in the seven realms.' Secondly, severing from the world. Relying on such solitude is of utmost importance. If one does rely on it, but only as a small circle abandoning a large one, like an old practitioner scooping water with a ladle, if one indulges in worldly misdeeds and laziness, it is meaningless. Therefore, all attachments to those never-ending tasks like drawing spice patterns, and to the eight worldly concerns and relatives, must be completely severed. Mixing Dharma and worldly affairs will lead to the loss of Dharma's essence and prevent any accomplishment. Thus, Jetsun said, 'Child, if you do not relinquish this world and mix worldly affairs with the sacred Dharma, you will lose the Dharma today.' Secondly, the reasons for relying on a lama, including the method of examination, and the manner of reliance, including the qualities. The first is 'self-awareness' to 'presence.' That is, in general, all the qualities of the three vehicles arise from relying on a virtuous friend. In particular, the root of all attainments in secret mantra and the turning of the wheel of all mandalas reside in the virtuous friend. Moreover, it is extremely necessary for a yogi that the innate wisdom is revealed through the power of the lama's blessings alone, which dispels obscurations. It is like seeing a vase in a dark room with the aid of a lamp. Therefore, it is impossible to realize through self-assured speculation and superficial understanding. Furthermore, one should not even presume to have the right to merely look at tantras and instructions. The Tantra of the Wheel of Bliss says, 'Likewise, if a qualified teacher does not reveal the instruction of the Dharmakaya, even if one seeks the Dharma with various means and deceptions, with the fault of stealing the Dharma, one will not realize one's own mind and will fall into the lower realms.' The Secret Essence Tantra says, 'Without pleasing the teacher and without receiving empowerments, diligence in listening and so forth is fruitless and leads to falling into the lower realms.' Realization through the kindness of the lama is also stated in the Vast Expanse of Space Tantra: 'Through the definitive instructions of a qualified lineage, one will realize one's own mind by oneself.' Therefore, the way to rely on a lama is to first see the lama as the actual Buddha with faith and love, then practice according to the lama's instructions, and please the lama in three ways. For example, it is like planting seeds in a field, watering them, and fertilizing them. If one relies in this way, the sprout of wisdom will grow in one's mind through the power of the lama's blessings. Moreover, the fault of disliking the lama is also stated in the sutra: 'Even if one accumulates merit for countless eons, if one despises the virtuous friend, everything will be destroyed.'

The essence of mind, the Dharmakaya, is known immediately when shown, but impossible to know without being shown. Thus it is said. The Hevajra Tantra says: 'Not spoken by others, co-emergent, not arising anywhere, but shown by the Lama's skillful means.' Thus it is said. Saraha says: 'If one receives the beneficial teachings through the Lama's kindness, even if one thinks one will not be liberated, one is certain to be liberated.' Thus it is said. That Lama, like ordinary mantra practitioners, must possess eight qualities. In particular, they must be skilled in the words and meanings of the tantras of Secret Mantra Atiyoga, have abandoned worldly activities, be independently accomplished through the view, meditation, and conduct of the wisdom of individual self-awareness, the true meaning of Dharmata, possess the signs and standards of liberation in this life, the next life, or the bardo, be tireless and of great wisdom for the sake of training disciples, and possess the six qualities of being without pride or arrogance. In the Great Arrangement of Ati, it says: 'Skilled and free from activities, possessing the meaning of Dharmata and reaching the standard, without delusion in the objects of desire, these are the qualities of a Secret Mantra Lama.' Thus, a teacher who possesses these six qualities can empty the seeds of the six classes of disciples, purify the six afflictions, and establish the ability to generate the meaning of the six wisdoms in their minds. Secondly, offering body, speech, etc. Having gone to such a Lama, one should rely on them with reverence and service, and act properly through the three doors of pleasing the teacher. It is not enough to do just a little. Therefore, Jetsun (Milarepa) set a standard for relying on Marpa, etc. Through material offerings, even if the Lama does not desire them, one should offer gold, silver, precious jewels, horses, cattle, etc. If the Lama desires it, one should deceive and offer one's own son, wife, or another's daughter, etc. In the 'Longsal,' it says: 'Offer sons, precious jewels, and wealth, that which is most cherished and pleasing.' Thus it is said. In the 'Secret Essence,' it says: 'Offer kingdom and one's own body, sons, wives, wealth, that which is most cherished and pleasing.' Thus it is said. To please the teacher with the service of body, speech, and mind, one should accomplish the Lama's activities without any selfishness. One should show respect and reverence through prostrations, circumambulations, and cutting off the lives of those who harm the Lama. In the 'Glorious Nectar Source Tantra,' it says: 'If there are sentient beings who harm the Lama, and create unpleasantness.'
