By Drak (author's name: Drak): Appearances are different because there is no certainty in one place, and also in dreams, one's own mind appears as many places, bodies, friends, and desirable qualities. Asanga (author's name: Thogs-med) said: Ghosts, animals, people, and gods, how are they divided into categories? Because one thing has different minds, they desire that things are not accomplished. So it is said. Because many appear as one, there is also no certainty, because the aggregation of atoms appears as a mountain, and the aggregation of limbs appears as a body. As it is said in the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning: If there is no combination of atoms, how can that body exist? So it is said. In the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life it says: Likewise, without bodies, hands, etc., the ignorant mind clings to the body. It's like that. If explained with pith instructions, it can also be established. Just like this, the body and desirable qualities in dreams are not established from elsewhere, but they appear as truly, truly established. Likewise, the current appearances also appear as true, but in reality they are not true. In the King of Samadhi Sutra it says: People in their own rooms, enjoy desirable pleasures like in a dream, after waking up, they have not experienced those pleasures, they know it is a dream. Likewise, knowing seeing, hearing, kinds, differences, etc., all these are not true, like objects seen in a dream. So it is said. However, if you think that dreams are false, so they are different from daytime appearances, then whether it is long or short, many or few, there is no difference in deception. Today we know that dreams are false, but we don't know it when we are dreaming. Now we think that this appearance is true, but when the guru teaches with pith instructions, we know it is false. Sometimes even in sleep we know that dreams are false. However, if you think that daytime appearances are permanent, and dreams are impermanent every night, so they are different. Even if you think so, daytime appearances, the external seasons, the internal time of one day, walking, sitting, eating, sleeping, places, friends, secret mental thoughts, any impermanent phenomena, as long as you don't pay attention to them, they will appear as true. The external four elements, the internal self-body, the secret self-mind, attachment, hatred, hope, fear, these are all similar. There is not even a little bit of difference, why cling to the daytime? Originally, for what appears as stable and unstable, there is no truth or falsehood. Length of time has no truth or falsehood for illusion, like that. Originally, clinging to it as true, so it appears as true, clinging to it as untrue, so it appears as untrue.

From the perspective of appearance, as a sign that phenomena themselves have no truth or falsehood in their essence, there are stories of falling off cliffs while asleep and crossing water without harm, and of yogis becoming accustomed to appearances being unreal, so they are not obstructed by mountains and rocks, and so on. However, due to the delusion of beings, they consider what is stable in habit to be true and what is unstable to be untrue, but even with such distinctions, there is no difference. The 'Treasure of Reasoning' (Tshad ma rigs gter) states: 'In reality, appearance is mind itself; external objects do not exist at all. Upon the stability and instability of habits, distinctions of truth and falsehood are made.' Similarly, the appearances of the intermediate state (bardo) and future realms are also without any real existence. Shantideva said: 'Who made the iron burning ground? From where did those masses of fire arise?' However, if someone thinks that objects exist and are directly perceived by the senses, who is the madman? This is not true. When the eye looks at form, the form does not go out, and the shape does not come in, so there is no contact. If one sees without contact, then all knowable things in all directions would be directly perceived by the senses, but that is not seen either. If there is contact, it is not seen, because it would become one. It is not seen because the object and the senses exist, because dreams and the intermediate state's objects are shown by consciousness. Even if it becomes an object of the senses, it is not valid cognition. The 'Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds' (Spyod 'jug) states: 'Even direct perception of forms and so on is merely by convention, not by valid cognition.' And the 'Extensive Sky Treasury Tantra' (Nam mkha' che rgyas pa'i rgyud) states: 'Whatever becomes an object of the senses, those are not valid cognition.' And 'In the ultimate sense, there is no object; eyes and ears, nose and tongue, body and mind, etc., the senses do not see; what is seen is obscured by the mind.' And the 'Guhya Tantra' (Gur las) states: 'Form is not held by the eye; sound is not by the hearer; the tongue does not sense taste; smell is not by the nose; touch is not the body's cavity.' Therefore, all of this is appearance arising from the power of habits in the mind since beginningless time, from the awakening of that, and it is not seen because external objects exist and are connected with the senses. If that were the case, because the essence is one and there is no relationship of arising from it, it would not be seen either. Naropa said: 'These phenomena of appearance and existence are not separate from self-aware mind, because they are appearing and clear.'
