Death! One should contemplate! Third, from "death is near" to "no benefit": In general, when the time of death arrives, nothing other than Dharma can be a refuge in the bardo and the afterlife. As it is said: "In this world, neither father, mother, nor friends, Nor relatives and kin can be a refuge. Sons and daughters are likewise not protectors, Only merit can protect. There is no other refuge in the world." In particular, the fear of death cannot be averted by clan or army; moreover, one must abandon everything and depart. Even having the wealth of Vaishravana cannot deceive death. Even having divine garments, even having ambrosial food, even having a beautiful form, even having eloquent speech, even having swift speed, even having a valiant army, even having medicine and mantras, there is not the slightest benefit. As the Vinaya Sutra says: "Even the brave cannot protect, nor can a king who practices discipline and austerity, Nor can action, diligence, courage, a large retinue, or wisdom. How can one escape from death?" And "Brahma, Indra, Vishnu, the maker of darkness, the evil speaker, the blue lion, Even they cannot avert death. In the end, neither medicine, nor all mantras and armies, Nor gods and protectors, interdependence, nor wealth and relatives can protect." Contemplate such a principle and meditate on impermanence. Third (fourth, examine), contemplate impermanence by considering that time is uncertain: from "especially" to "examine," in between. In particular, death is universal for all beings, but still uncertain. Is there a problem? Recognizing that uncertainty itself is the root of destruction. If it were certain, then there would be assurance in between, and there would be no problem. However, being young and without illness does not bring any help, life is finite, cannot be increased, cannot be determined or estimated to what extent, cannot be determined in what place one will die, nor can one determine by what cause one will die. In order, the Good Night Sutra says: "Who knows if one will die tomorrow (knows examine)? One should do what needs to be done today. Are you friends with the great army of the Lord of Death, or are you enemies?"

In the Sutra of the Excellent Army, it says: 'Any direction of the earth is my final destination. It should be known that there is no delay.' And in the scriptures, it says: 'Some die from overeating, some die from medicine. What need is there to mention unfavorable conditions? Therefore, nothing is certain.' In the Collection of Special Expositions, it says: 'The moment one first enters the womb, life decreases without increase.' And it says: 'Many men and women, even in their prime, will die. So, who will say this person is young? What confidence is there in being alive? Some die in the womb, likewise, some are born, likewise, some wander everywhere, some are young, some are old, some are in their prime, gradually they will all die, like ripe fruits falling.' Like this, measure and contemplate the various aspects of impermanence. Fourth (Fifth Examination): The measure of arising in the continuum is: day and night... repeat. At all times, never forgetting for a moment, constantly fearing the thought of death, and because life is short, knowing that one will die wherever one is born, thereby turning the mind away from samsara, and knowing that there is no time to do wrong, so one does not do worldly trivialities, does not live leisurely, but strives in the three doors of body, speech, and mind in the Dharma, not delaying or postponing, but starting to practice the Dharma now, because one knows that the affairs and phenomena of this life are meaningless, so one throws the eight worldly concerns to the wind. If one can be confident in the Dharma that is beneficial at the time of death, and does not change, that is the measure of arising. Fifth (Sixth Examination) is: The necessity is... does not enter. In general, by practicing impermanence, one remembers death at all times, and knows that there is nothing beneficial except the supreme Dharma, thereby devoting oneself wholeheartedly to the Dharma. Many unprecedented qualities will arise in the continuum. Because there is no clinging to permanence, greed and hatred towards enemies, friends, wealth, and anything else will naturally subside. The two accumulations will be naturally completed. Understanding the intentions of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and realizing that worldly dharmas are meaningless, thereby abandoning attachment. First, it becomes the cause for entering practice. In the middle, it destroys the demon of laziness that arises from thinking there is free time and opportunity. Finally, it brings the Dharma to its ultimate conclusion, and manifests the fruit of attaining the unborn, innate wisdom.
