Regarding the subjugation of the Lord of Death, with wrathful deities, subjugate the gods, demons, and aggregates. Furthermore, with peaceful deities, subjugate fears with and without obstacles. With wrathful deities, subjugate the demonic thoughts of joy, arrogance, and pride. With peaceful deities, subjugate insight and means. With wrathful deities, subjugate calm abiding and wisdom. There is a special need to bless the manifestation of the nature of the union of space and wisdom. Secondly, focusing the mind on speech, such as writing the white letter "A," and so on, are the twenty-one letters of mind-holding, or writing the shapes of the first seven letters, or entrusting oneself to them, thereby obtaining the respective qualities spoken of from the union of the sun and moon. Furthermore, having created the form of stupas, etc., and entrusting oneself to them, one entrusts oneself until one is accustomed to it. Alternatively, one contemplates in the mind such offerings as those arranged above and meditates. In the center of the body, the three channels, the five chakras, the subtle hand-seal yoga, and the subtle yoga of body, speech, and bindu, one focuses the mind. When these are familiar, it is a special method to leave the mind without conceptualizing anything. It is also called training the mind in the sound of space. It is also called the view of the three shakings of space. Having mixed, transferred, and united the mind with the clarity of the outer space, Kamalashila also said to forcefully cut off conceptual thoughts. As it is also said in the seventeen ultimate tantras of Vajradhara, all those related to mind-holding, it is crucial to put them into practice according to the oral instructions. The key point of speech is to abandon all speech of good, bad, and intermediate, and even when breathing in and out, it should be done without the lips touching the teeth so that no sound is heard, or one should breathe in and out through the nose. The key point of mind is to prevent other conceptual thoughts from arising other than relying on and focusing on calm abiding alone. With mindfulness, hold the mind on the object of focus and do not forget. With awareness, discern whether one is distracted or not, and then prolong the duration of effort, and do not be lazy or indolent in meditating on samadhi. Secondly, in order to prevent the accomplishments from deteriorating and to further enhance them, if one is controlled by rampant conceptual thoughts and becomes distracted from the previous object of mindfulness, then again settle the mind on it. Continuously settle it. When scattering outward, restrain the mind and settle it. Through awareness, repeatedly observe and scrutinize, and persistently settle it again and again.

By generating joy in that samadhi, one tames; pacifies the faults of distraction; eliminates sleepiness and drowsiness, making it completely peaceful; makes it single-pointed without scattering; and effortlessly abides in it. Thus, through nine aspects, one makes it non-degenerative and increasing, thereby pacifying agitation. It pacifies agitation, regret, harmful thoughts, desire, longing, doubt, and so forth. In order to eliminate sinking, the eleven applications of mind should be understood during the stage of insight. That accomplished samadhi is the samadhi of a child's initial engagement, from the aspect of the mind becoming workable. However, until one has developed the ability to willfully employ desire, single-pointedness, abandonment, going, staying, placing, and abiding, meditating on it is merely a support for insight. Moreover, by becoming accustomed to the aspects of peace and grossness, having abandoned the six afflictions of the desire realm, and having abandoned the ninth, the immediately preceding non-overcoming, from the moment one obtains the mind of actual samadhi onwards, the immediately preceding of the previous and the immediately preceding of the subsequent continue all the way to cessation. Even without having obtained samadhi from those, one cannot control oneself in meditating on anything without even a single-pointed mind of desire. Therefore, one should become accustomed to it until it is accomplished. After that, even if one places the mind without support, not conceptualizing anything, when abiding, the gross conceptual thoughts of mind and mental factors are pacified, and because it abides naturally, it is called calm abiding. Even though this is embraced by bodhicitta and renunciation, because it is not connected with meditating on the wisdom of selflessness, it is established as a child's initial engagement. The very nature of the mind, without expansion or contraction, is the essence and main part of calm abiding. Not conceptualizing anything other than a single object is the aspect of the retinue, which is the means of its accomplishment. Having accomplished such calm abiding, based on that, in the conventional truth, one trains all phenomena as illusory, practicing in the manner of the sixteen examples, and abides equally in the natural state. In the ultimate truth, one abides equally in the natural state, which is free from elaboration, like the sky. These two were explained earlier when establishing the view, and those words should be practiced here without leaving anything out. These will be explained a little below, so that's all for here. However, calm abiding is a state of natural abiding, so the passage of its time harms insight. Therefore, the two demons of drowsiness and sleepiness arise. Therefore, one should examine them separately, thinking in one's mind which one should be tamed.
