Completed. First, establish the nature of the six bardos through observation. Establish the nature of emptiness through the six bardos of cause, effect, and essence. Through the three examples, meanings, and signs, transform the appearances of the six bardos into spontaneously accomplished Kayas and wisdoms. Through the sixteen similes of illusion, establish the six bardos as the union of appearance and emptiness, the self-born Bodhicitta. First, there are two aspects: establishing the inner self-grasping as emptiness and establishing the external "mine" as emptiness. Among these, the first is that we, from beginningless lifetimes in samsara, are not given the opportunity to be liberated from the state of samsara. What binds us? It is this self-grasping that binds us. The tantras say that this self-grasping is the sole enemy of all sentient beings. Upon examining this, first, by investigating from where the term "I" arises, it does not arise from itself, because it is already established. Nor does it arise from another, because cause and effect are contradictory. Both have faults and shortcomings. Without a cause, it is impossible to be the cause of anything, like a rabbit's horn. All phenomena of samsara arise from "I"; know that "I" does not arise from another. Because the cause is not found, this sign is also applicable to "mine," creating certainty about the state of having no reason. Second, establishing the essence as emptiness involves (examining): examining the location, examining the state, and examining the dweller. The first is: Except for the five states where all sentient beings are without mind, there is a continuous grasping of "I am," so for all needed objects, they think, "This is mine," and grasp them as their own. Therefore, examine which of the three—body, speech, or mind—this basis resides in. Coolly and carefully search the entire body, from head to toe, inside and out. If it resides inside, then all external appearances would not be seen, like a person inside a house not seeing the outside world. Not seeing inside from the outside is like the inside of the eye. Not seeing below from above is like hell, and not seeing above from below is like the realm of the gods. In that case, the mind would certainly not perceive all of the body's heat, cold, and hunger, because it exists in one place and not in another. Furthermore, if that "I" pervades the entire body, then when a finger is cut off, a piece of "I" would fall off, and when there is no ear, a piece of "I" would be missing.
