The uncorrected, great, equal, and natural way of abiding is such that the yogi's mind is free from the elaboration of dualistic grasping. Without any hindrance, there is no attachment to the objects of the five senses. Gradually or all at once, one enters into the wisdom of self-awareness, without meditating, not meditating, without stopping, without thinking, but in the manner of wisdom's self-awareness. As it is said in the *Thal 'Gyur*: "The characteristic of meditation is the appearance of phenomena: In the nature of emptiness and clarity, Not mixed with any nature, Exhausting the extremes of grasping and being grasped, The nature of reality is pure in itself. The appearance is not a mistaken one, But the nature of pure causes and conditions, From the self-purification of existence and non-existence, The attachment to the objects of the five senses is purified, The awareness of the elements is purified, And the appearance of the increase of pure wisdom is shown. That is the nature of exhaustion." Examples: Like pressing down on a lamp wick and extinguishing the flame, the stream of thoughts is cut off. Like mixing water and milk, the mind is blended into the meaning of the union of calm abiding and insight. Like a clear crystal, the difference between mind and mind-essence is distinguished. Like a lamp in a vase, it is clear and unobstructed, without sinking into the depths of calm abiding. As it is said in the *Kunsel*: "There are four examples that illustrate meditation: Pressing down on a lamp wick, Mixing water and milk, Like a clear crystal, And like a lamp in a vase." As it is said. Exhortations: As it is said in the *Kunsel*: "Hey! Secret Lord, definitely hold on! Where does the intention, which is called view, come from? Meditation, samadhi, and contemplation, Without distraction, without proliferation, without separation, In the state of abiding, habituation, and familiarity, Where do those come from? Explain by combining the exhortations!" As it is said. Furthermore, straying from that clear mind, knowing the three aspects of arising, abiding, and ceasing of thoughts, and then counting them, this is meditation on the stream of thoughts, which cannot be stopped for even a moment. Meditating on emptiness without end, below the secret cycle, is like throwing a stone in the dark, so that the essence of the view cannot be seen. Meditating on the generation and completion stages with characteristics is like pretending to be what one is not. Meditating without losing the attitude of any of the three minds of grasper and grasped is because one desires that the authentic enlightenment of the Buddha should arise from the inferior ground of samsaric mind. Meditating without effort through the four ways of abiding is the difference between superior and inferior. In that very text it says: Thoughts

Ordinary meditation is shown to be like a monkey. Meditating on emptiness without end is like a bird trying to find the edge of the sky. Meditating on the characteristics of grasping and being grasped is like turning water into fire. Meditating on the clarity of grasping and being grasped is like a servant trying to become a master. Meditating on effortless abiding is shown to be like a lion. This is the second, non-meditation: essence, definition, division, example, and appellation, these five. The first is: the wisdom realm of self-awareness, the great union of awareness and wisdom, the innate meditation that is continuous, the intention of the Buddha, just as it is, becomes the nature. As it says in Don Sal: The essence is self-awareness, without interruption. The definition is: through the door of object, power, and attention, the clear grasping of appearance, and transforming color and letters into the state of emptiness, clarity, and bliss, not attending to anything in the mind; and not separating from the nature of intention; and not needing to become something already accomplished. As it says in that very text: Not attending to the mind, therefore it is the definition of non-meditation. Not separating from the nature, and because there is no need to do anything. The division is: non-meditation with characteristics, like the generation and completion stages of Dzogchen's realization of accomplishment, and the transformation of confidence; non-meditation without characteristics, the naturally accomplished stages, the second of the two stages. These two non-meditations of the Great Perfection, there is the non-meditation of nature, the view of abiding; and the non-meditation of realization, the view of the transformation of space, these two, there are four. As it says in the Spontaneous, Meaningful, Great Tantra: The divisions of non-meditation are of two kinds: non-meditation with characteristics and non-meditation without characteristics. Each one also shows two: non-meditation of nature and non-meditation of realization. The fourth, the example, is: awareness has the innate, uninterrupted great meditation, once the yogi knows this meaning, it will not be interrupted by sinking, agitation, or conceptual thoughts, and will not be separated, always abiding in the meaning; and the example of naturally appearing without meditation. As it says in that very text: The example of non-meditation without interruption is shown to be like a river. Without meditation, not separating from the meaning, like a bee clinging to glue. Without meditation, naturally clear, like the heart of the clear and bright sun.
