Having sought the basis, even searching within the realm of minute particles, one trains in emptiness as illusion and dream, through the key points of whether objects exist or not, coming and going, and so forth. Speech and mind are also threefold: outer, inner, and intermediate. The objects and lords of the three places of arising, dwelling, and going are examined and analyzed, and the detailed methods of training are clearly explained in the previous "Searching for Faults" and "Cutting the River." Summarizing and indicating with scripture: From the Ornament of Clear Realization, it says: The training of the mind is like this: outer is the external object, inner is the body; in between, the body and mind are bound together; it is done by the action of speech's activity; most importantly, the mind trains the mind. Objects are existent and nonexistent, contemplate through the key points of going and coming. The body is name and minute particles, analyze with many distinctions. In the middle of the body and mind combined, observe. With the distinctions of speech's expression, each wind and going and coming, are accomplished by mixing with the non-duality of time. Most importantly, the mind is going, coming, and dwelling, train by not examining reasons. Like this, grasp the extent of proficiency, like this its characteristics are perfected. And so forth. These universally accomplish all supreme and common attainments, it is necessary to make practice the key point and enter the correct path, because there is such a need. Just as it says there: The training of the body, taming the mind itself, and the perfection of speech's activity, the mind itself enters the path. Relying on the wind, the body and mind separate, in order to cut off the escape places of the three realms, fundamentally reverse the clinging to body and speech, in order to equalize the abysses of the six realms, oppress the key points of body, speech, and mind. And so forth. Like this, having perfected the conduct, always apply the manifest key points. And so forth. Second, with the wisdom of actual meditation, make a great determination on the natural state of reality: the fault of not meditating is explained, the reason for needing to meditate is explained, and the actual meditation is explained, these three. First: That is, among the three wisdoms of hearing, thinking, and meditating, the most important is the wisdom of meditating, for example, just as having food but not eating it will not satisfy, not meditating means there is no time to be liberated from samsara, nor is there direct experience of the nature of reality, nor is there abandonment of the object-grasping of the mind's focus and the obscurations of karma and afflictions, nor is there a time to see the truth of the Buddha.

I don't have (that ability)! In general, even when a Bodhisattva sees the truth, they will not immediately abandon all relinquished meditations. Therefore, for ordinary beings, there is no way to attain the fruit without meditation. Therefore, it is said in the *Mūlamadhyamakakārikā*: The fault of not meditating is that the characteristics of samsara manifest, self and other, object and consciousness, as well as views with words, objects with targets, afflictions bind the self, one will also lose the path to Buddhahood, not understand the nature of the fruit, have no basis for the equality of all dharmas, self-awareness binds the three realms, and one will fall due to conceptual thoughts. So it is said. Second, the reason for meditating is: to be liberated from those (faults), giving the opportunity to cultivate perfect qualities, that is, it is said in that (the *Mūlamadhyamakakārikā*): Karma cuts off attachment to objects, abandons afflictions and so on, uproots the root of samsara. Wisdom grasps the nature of mind, abides, breath is exhausted, the path of emptiness of dharmata is found, the basis of self-nature purity appears. So it is said. Truly explaining meditation, generally explaining from the perspective of showing the nature, and separately explaining from the perspective of the actual method of meditation, there are two types. The first type, for those with objects of mind who have objects, explains the nature, meaning, classification, definition, metaphor, and appellation of meditation, these six; for those with objects of mind who have self-appearance, explains the nature of non-meditation and so on; determining one's own meditation, these three. This (what is said here) is also a method to stabilize the common understanding of the two (types of objects of mind) in the continuum. The nature of the first type is: the mind abides in one-pointedness, and can be used for the meaning of vipassanā, cutting off the continuum of inner and outer wandering, and wanting to stop the grasper and the grasped, that is, it is said in that (the *Mūlamadhyamakakārikā*): What is called meditation is the mind abiding, cutting off inner and outer wandering, the grasper and the grasped cease. So it is said. In the *Thigle Kunsel*, it is said: The nature is abiding in one-pointedness. So it is said. In the *Tsal Dzog*, it is said: The nature of meditation is non-conceptual. So it is said. The meaning of the word is: In the *Tsal Dzog*, it is said: The meaning of the word shows cutting off distractions. So it is said. Because it is based on the meaning of the union of shamatha and vipassanā, and in order not to be distracted to other places, and in order to constantly abide in it without separation, and in order to become accustomed and familiar, and the conceptual thoughts of the untamed mind
