It is called meditation because it does not stray. In the two tantras, 'Dispersion-Free Meaning Clarity' and 'Bindu All-Clarity,' there are four definitions of meditation: Meditating by focusing on the meaning, meditating without distraction, meditating without separation, and being accustomed and familiar without straying. The divisions are: general and specific. Generally, with characteristics is generation and completion, with and without effort. Without characteristics, there are also with and without effort: mind-abiding, samadhi, and dhyana are with effort, and the Buddha's intention, the great unfabricated natural state, is without effort. Specifically, there are also two types of wise individuals with inner discernment. As it is said in 'All-Clarity': 'Divisions are shown as two types, with characteristics and without characteristics. Without characteristics, there are also two: the great meditation method without effort, and meditation without non-effort. It is the same with characteristics. In short, there are two: generation and completion.' And as it is said in 'Consequence': 'Meditation is called mind-abiding, cutting off inner and outer movements, stopping the grasped and the grasper. What arises from the natural state is called pure dhyana. Wind, channels, bindu, body posture, eyes, and emptiness are what is desired in meditation. The light and color of letters, and the expansion and contraction of transformations, are called samadhi. The unfabricated, natural abiding state, abiding as it is without change, is the intention of the Buddhas.' Again, it is said that there are two types, with effort and without effort, but they are included in two types of wise individuals. As it is said in 'Complete Skill': 'Meditation on the continuum of conceptual thought, meditation on emptiness without limit, meditation on the characteristics of the grasped and the grasper, meditation on the clarity of the grasped and the grasper, meditation on the method of abiding without effort.' The definition is: Although there are various differences elsewhere, here the essence of the ultimate intention is: whichever of the four yogas of continuity, in the same state, the exhaustion of phenomena, the awareness of original purity, empty and clear without obstruction, not mixed with the mind, intellect, and consciousness of the three realms, dhyana, or formless meditation, the self-nature without conceptual thought and elaboration of the grasped and the grasper, the manifestation of the nature of phenomena pure from the beginning, not false, not unequal, abiding.
