Discrimination Chapter Three, showing the reason for arising. Then, the Lord of Lanka again asked the Lord of Secrets about the fourth of the twelve sentences previously spoken, "The essence of Bodhi is determined by its own nature," and asked about the prophecy that it would appear again: Alas! Lord of Secrets, when you speak of the arising of the profound secret of the Great Vehicle, how is it determined and arises when you say, "The essence of Bodhi is determined by its own nature, and it will appear again"? He replied: Lord of Lanka, all that is sublime appears as the essence of Bodhi in all times and places. He asked again: Lord of Secrets, how do those sublime beings who have fully attained enlightenment and abide in the essence of Bodhi appear in all times and places? If it appears, then it cannot be without arising; if it does not appear, then it cannot arise with constant wisdom and constant compassion, so how can this be fully understood? After asking this, the Lord of Secrets replied: Alas! Lord of Lanka, it is like this: how is the essence of Bodhi, so is the sublime being; what is the essence of Bodhi, that is the sublime being; what is the sublime being, that is the essence of Bodhi itself. The sublime being is invisible, and the essence of Bodhi is also ungraspable. Question: If it is invisible and ungraspable, then as the sublime ones say, seeing that one sees all dharmas, and seeing all dharmas sees the essence of Bodhi. It contradicts "Enlightening that one is enlightening," so how can this be fully understood? After asking this, he replied: Alas! Lord of Lanka, it is like this: the form that is seen is not the real thing, and the unseen is the true seeing. The unspeakable feeling is the experience, and seeing and attaining are only nominal terms. On that pure great path, the sublime beings who appear, thoroughly realize the great meaning, in the state of ungraspable, in the moment of unmoving and non-discriminating, not abiding in the nature of the Dharmakaya, self-born wisdom is as vast as the sky, unmixed and completely perfect, unborn and unceasing is suchness, is the realization that cannot be expressed by speech and thought.

transcended. Each one's own realm of activity. Not discernible in the center or at the edges, just as it is. In the heart essence, Bodhi, the all-encompassing mother, without contrivance, blissful and natural. Again, the lord of Lanka asked: "O Lord of Secrets, how long does the very essence of the heart of Bodhi, the Suchness, abide? What are its characteristics and nature?" He replied: "O Lord of Lanka, it is not definite in any way: seasons, months, half-months, days, suns, watches, half-watches, moments, instants, brief moments, immediately after, Suchness itself, eons, and immeasurable eons. It is without characteristics and without nature. It is indiscernible. It is practiced. It is definitely examined. It is fully enjoyed. It appears as anything. It is definitely existent. It arises from all. It is the gathering of all. It is all-pervasive. It is born of all. It is completely pure. It is not established anywhere. It is without pervasion, without non-pervasion, without high or low, without large or small, without good or bad, without wide or narrow, without cause or effect, without male or female, without lineage, without form, without karma and its maturation, without outer or inner, without birth, without change, without darkness or light, without before or after, without beginning or end, without self or other, without effort or accomplishment, without acceptance or rejection, naturally uncreated, completely luminous, uncorrupted, unborn, unproduced. O Lord of Lanka, why do you ask about characteristics and nature? The heart essence of Bodhi transcends appearance and non-appearance, therefore characteristics and nature are indiscernible. Thus, O Lord of Lanka, those noble beings who abide in the heart essence of Bodhi, in that indiscernibility, Vajrasattva, emptiness, Suchness, the holy one, from those places, because they are brides, thus it is said: 'O noble beings, have you seen the heart essence of Bodhi?' From the very Suchness of the heart essence of Bodhi, it is said: 'O noble friends, we have seen the heart essence of Bodhi without seeing it.' He bestowed the teaching: 'How do you see without seeing?' They reported: 'Without seeing it as the heart essence of Bodhi, we see everything as the heart essence of Bodhi.' He bestowed the teaching: 'What is called the heart essence of Bodhi?' They reported: 'O noble friend,'
