Therefore, the Buddha is a nominal designation. The Dharma is also a nominal designation. Bodhi is also a nominal designation. Likewise, all that is designated and clung to, such as the realm, wisdom, the Dharmakaya, different bodies, sentient beings, and the world, should be understood as merely nominal. Lord of Lanka, what is nominal? It is something that is suddenly designated, not something that is inherently present. Lord of Lanka, if it were inherently present, then all that arises suddenly would not occur. Lord of Lanka, what is sudden is like a cloud, not permanent, not inherently present, and not able to be examined. Lord of Lanka, therefore, all names, symbols, terms, signs, designations, actions, and the ripening of actions are sudden, and should be understood as arising, ceasing, obscuring, and clarifying. Lord of Lanka, if actions and the ripening of actions, etc., were not suddenly designated, then suchness could not be established as such. Lord of Lanka, suchness should be understood as a nominal designation that is not subject to any influence. Lord of Lanka, therefore, all dharmas are without name, without words, unspeakable, and the path of words is cut off. Said: Lord of Secrets, do you not even discriminate the slightest meaning of the basis upon which names are designated? Said: Lord of Lanka, I do not discriminate even the slightest meaning of the basis. I do not discriminate at all. Why is that? Because even the slightest meaning cannot be found even if the Buddha himself were to search for it. Therefore, it is only in relation to sudden discrimination and non-discrimination that the terms "Buddha" and "sentient being" are designated. But in suchness itself, there is not even a trace of Buddha or sentient being. However, children, obscured by clouds of suddenness, are particularly attached to sudden dharmas and discriminate between samsara and bodhi. They discriminate between sentient beings and Buddhas. Said: Lord of Secrets, then how should these two, sentient beings and Buddhas, be understood? Said: Lord of Lanka, they should be understood as emptiness. Said: Lord of Secrets, where does emptiness abide? Said: Lord of Lanka, emptiness abides in all dharmas. Said: Secret

Master of , where do all dharmas reside? Answer: Lord of Lanka, all dharmas do not reside anywhere because they are merely emptiness. Question: Master of secrets, where does dwelling in emptiness reside? Answer: Lord of Lanka, dwelling in emptiness is dwelling in great love, because emptiness dwells completely in benefiting sentient beings. Why? Because Buddha and sentient beings have no meaning apart from emptiness. Question: Master of secrets, if all Buddhas and sentient beings are empty, then how does one act with great compassion for whom? Whose designation is great compassion? Answer: Lord of Lanka, all dharmas naturally abide in emptiness, therefore, not seeing duality, and having no object of compassion, it is great compassion because it guides the essence of all beings to enlightenment. The compassion of children, who take the lives of sentient beings in the three thousand great thousand worlds, and those who liberate them, should be understood as small compassion. Lord of Lanka, therefore, one should always abide in great compassion. Lord of Lanka, those who abide in great compassion do not liberate any sentient beings, nor do they bind them, but kill them without actually killing them with a vajra sword. Why? Because sentient beings are designated from the absence of sentient beings. Great compassion should be understood as a designation of the difference between suchness and suddenness. Lord of Lanka, therefore, it is like this: All phenomena of existence, sight, appearance, and fame, which are named as infinite, are merely designated as names. Where is the reality in that? The basis for naming, without cause, attachment, accomplishment, and completion, where is it seen and manifested? Therefore, action is completed without action. From the invisible, everything appears, everything is a sudden appearance, it is the essence of non-appearance, and there is no attachment to either existence or non-existence. From the absence of Buddha, Buddha and, the designations of different names such as the nature of enlightenment, are designated to show to the ignorant who do not understand. For that very nature, the designations of names such as Buddha and the nature of enlightenment, have no name.
