Sakya: If it is said that because everything does not arise from the proximate cause, therefore from the capable cause, the result is proven to exist, then (I) say, here your reasoning is meaningless. If your tenet obtains the characteristic of being established, then my tenet will also be established; if your tenet obtains the characteristic of being refuted, then my tenet will also be refuted. For example, fire burns both, not just one. Here, for example, those who assert sound promise that sound is permanent. What is the reason? Because it is not corporeal. What is the example? Like space. Why? Just as space is not corporeal, therefore it is permanent, so is sound. Therefore, sound is proven to be permanent, then (I) say, this is not a promise, and there is something else to say, which is that sound is impermanent. What is the reason? Because it is produced. What is the example? Like a pot. Why? Just as a pot is made by earth, potter, wheel, rope, and human effort, so too, sound is produced by the effort of the throat and palate, etc., therefore, sound is proven to be impermanent. Therefore, a result will not be established by a mere false reason. Whoever speaks in accordance with reality, that is valid cognition, not from a false reason. Therefore, the reason is meaningless. Furthermore, because it contradicts the promise of what is to be proven, the reason will not become a proof. Here, when the promise exists, the reason does not exist; when the reason exists, the promise does not exist. Therefore, whose is the reason without a promise? Because it is not a co-existent phenomenon. When the letter "pra" exists, the letters "ti" and "jnya" do not exist. Similarly, the letter "pa", the letter "ra", the letter "a", just like the letter "pra", so are the letters. An unborn or dead son cannot do anything, so too is the reason. Therefore, it will not become a result by relying on a cause, because it is established from no cause. No cause means cause.
