If one confesses one's faults before a painted image, then on the night of the twenty-first day, a great light will emanate from the painted image with a thousand eyes and a thousand hands, overwhelming the light of the sun and moon, and with its light illuminating the boundaries of the ten directions, the three thousand great thousand worlds, and all immeasurable places, illuminating them without obstruction. Yogis and painters, and all sentient beings touched by the light, will have all their extremely heavy misdeeds melted away and completely purified at once. Only those who do not perform this ritual with one-pointed mind will be ineffective. The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara also said this: In the past, the Tathagata Vipashyin also showed these thousand hands and thousand eyes, and having seen the subduing of the great demons, said: "O Bhagavan, now I also show these thousand hands and thousand eyes and have subdued the great demons. Those thousand hands, each manifesting as a Chakravartin king, will become Chakravartin kings for a thousand generations of the Good Kalpa. Those thousand eyes, each manifesting as a Buddha, will be equal to the thousand Buddhas of the Good Kalpa. O Bhagavan, that Bodhisattva's body is the most excellent among those who subdue demons." Then, the Bhagavan said to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara: "Good, good! I will also, by the power of blessing, bless this dharani of your mother until the end of the kalpa." 是故行持手印成就之事。 世尊告曰：我亦随喜，汝当宣说。 于是，菩萨观世音自在说道：当菩萨观世音自在念诵此明咒时，从三千大千世界之欲界乃至非想非非想处之诸天宫殿，皆六种震动。 遍净天及大自在天亦不安乐，甚大惊恐。 一切凶恶鬼神亦受大苦，发出哀嚎，东西奔窜，无处可逃。 于是，化身以众多眷属及凶恶鬼神等，告之曰：汝等若不随顺我之明咒，违背于我，则头破裂如柴。 世尊，此明咒能摧毁山岳，能干涸大海。 此明咒能摧伏非天之军队，能守护国土。 此明咒能断除一切凶恶鬼神、一切疾病、一切恶人。 此明咒能摧伏、调伏三十三天之诸天。 善男子，若有人念诵、受持此明咒，则其人之威力不可言说。 念诵、受持此明咒者，乃是尊贵、具权势者，乃至命终，国王亦慈爱、悦意，一切愿望皆得圆满。 若欲调伏外道魔军，则焚烧古古律香，我当念诵大身咒二十一遍。 若欲令一切众人皆慈爱于我，则以咒语加持柳枝二十一遍，系于臂上，则受人慈爱、恭敬。 若欲自身具足勇气与智慧，则以咒语加持芸香一千零八遍，涂于心间，则无有任何障碍。

Therefore, it is the practice of accomplishing mudras. The Blessed One said: I also rejoice, you should speak. Then, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara spoke: When the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara recited this vidyā-mantra, all the abodes of the gods from the realm of desire in the three-thousand great-thousand world system up to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception shook in six ways. The gods of Akanistha and the Great Lord also became uneasy and greatly frightened. All the evil spirits and demons also experienced great suffering, uttering cries and scattering east and west, unable to find a place to go. Then, the emanation body, with many attendants and evil spirits and demons, proclaimed: If you do not follow my vidyā-mantra and act against me, your heads will be split into pieces. Blessed One, this vidyā-mantra can destroy mountains and dry up the great ocean. This vidyā-mantra can subdue the armies of the asuras and protect the countries. This vidyā-mantra can cut off all evil spirits and demons, all diseases, and all evil people. This vidyā-mantra can destroy and subdue the gods of the Thirty-Three. Son of good family, if anyone recites and holds this vidyā-mantra, the power and strength of that person cannot be expressed. Those who recite and hold this vidyā-mantra are noble and powerful, and until the end of their lives, they are loved and pleased by the king, and all their wishes are fulfilled. If one wishes to subdue the opposing demonic forces, then burn gugul incense, and I will recite the great body mantra twenty-one times. If one wishes that all people be loving towards me, then bless a willow branch with the mantra twenty-one times and tie it to the arm, and one will be loved and respected. If one wishes to be endowed with courage and wisdom, then bless rue with the mantra one thousand and eight times and apply it to the heart, and there will be no obstacles.
