The Bhagavan addressed the Bodhisattva King Who Holds All, saying: Son of good family, you should understand this: Here in this assembled mandala of attendants, there is a Bodhisattva Mahasattva named Avalokiteshvara. From countless eons in the past, he has perfected great loving-kindness and great compassion. Having diligently meditated upon and realized countless dharani gates, for the sake of benefiting and bringing happiness to sentient beings, he has secretly displayed such great miraculous power. After the Bhagavan had spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara rose from his seat, arranged his robes, and, with his palms joined, turned to where the Bhagavan was and said to him: O Bhagavan, I have a dharani mantra called "The Heart of Great Compassion," and for the sake of enabling many sentient beings to obtain benefit and happiness, to eliminate all diseases, to increase lifespan, to become wealthy and prosperous, to completely purify and eliminate heavy sins, non-virtuous actions, and transgressions, to be separated from obstructing demons and hindrances, to increase all white Dharma qualities, to perfect all seeds of virtue, to completely abandon all fear and dread, and to quickly fulfill all hopes, I wish to speak it today.
