In order to attain enlightenment, the Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha showed a short lifespan. Furthermore, son of good family, the Tathagata showed Nirvana, causing sentient beings to have the perception of rarity and difficulty in encountering him, as well as perceptions of sorrow and suffering, etc. Thus, they quickly grasp, memorize, recite, and comprehend these sutras spoken by the Buddha, the Bhagavan, and also widely and correctly explain them to others, so that there will be no slander. Therefore, the Tathagata showed a short lifespan. If the Tathagata always remained and did not pass into Nirvana, sentient beings would not have respect, nor would they develop the perception of difficulty in encountering him. They would not grasp, recite, comprehend, or widely and correctly explain the profound sutras spoken by the Tathagata. Why is that? Because they would think that the Bhagavan always remains in the world. Son of good family, for example, if someone sees that their parents have a lot of abundant jewels, they will not have a perception of rarity or wonder towards those jewels. Why is that? Because they have the perception that their parents' wealth is always there. Similarly, if the Bhagavan never passed into Nirvana, there would be no perception of rarity or difficulty in encountering him. Son of good family, also, for example, if someone whose parents are poor and have no wealth goes to the residence of a king or a great minister and sees that they have many treasuries, wealth, and jewels, etc., they will have a perception of rarity and difficulty in obtaining them, and that poor person will strive to find ways to obtain wealth. This is because they want to abandon poverty and destitution and attain happiness and prosperity. Son of good family, similarly, if one sees the Tathagata passing into Nirvana, they will also develop a perception of rarity, difficulty in encountering him, sorrow, and suffering. The appearance of the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, in the world also occurs only once in countless eons, just like the U-

Just as the udumbara flower appears a few times on hundreds of paths, may sentient beings develop the idea that it is rare and difficult to encounter, and may they develop respect for the Blessed One. For the sutras spoken by the Buddha himself, may they also develop the idea of truth and the idea of complete acceptance, and may they not slander them. Son of good family, therefore, the Tathagata, because of that cause and that condition, does not remain in the world for long and quickly shows nirvana. The Tathagatas, with such skillful means, completely ripen sentient beings. Then, those four Tathagatas also disappeared. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Beautiful Crest, and countless hundreds of thousands of Bodhisattvas, and also countless hundreds of thousands of beings, together went to the Vulture Peak Mountain, prostrated with their heads at the feet of the Blessed One Shakyamuni Tathagata, and then sat on one side. Then, the Bodhisattva Beautiful Crest reported what had happened, and then those four Tathagatas also came to Vulture Peak Mountain, where the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha was dwelling, and sat on their respective seats, and said to the retinue of Bodhisattvas: Son of good family, go and ask the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha if he has little trouble, little illness, is light and quick, and if he dwells in comfort? Also, please report to the Blessed One Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha that this profound Golden Light Sutra King, for the benefit of all sentient beings, to completely eliminate the terror of famine, and to make all sentient beings happy, it is excellent to teach this sutra, please rejoice in it. Then, those Bodhisattvas who came from their respective abodes, went to where the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha was, and after arriving, prostrated with their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and then reported exactly as those four Blessed Ones had said. Then, the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, to the Bodhisattva

He said "Good, good!" to those heroes. The four Tathagatas also urged me to explain this sacred Dharma for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings. At that time, the Bhagavan spoke these verses: I dwell on Vulture Peak Mountain, and though I expound this precious sutra, I also show passing into complete nirvana in order to liberate these many beings. For the sake of completely liberating those who are like children and have become perverse in their views, who do not have faith in my teachings, I also show passing into complete nirvana. Then, at that time, in that assembly, a Brahmin named the teacher Lungtenpa Brahmin Kaundinya, and thousands of Brahmins, made offerings to the Bhagavan. Having heard the sound of the Tathagata's great passing into complete nirvana, they immediately wept, touched the two feet of the Bhagavan, and requested the Bhagavan: If the Bhagavan cherishes all sentient beings, possesses great compassion, wishes to benefit them, treats all sentient beings equally like parents, illuminates like the moon, and is like the rising sun of wisdom and great wisdom, and if you see all sentient beings as if they are being seized by Rahu, please grant me a sacred object. The Bhagavan remained silent. Then, through the power of the Buddha, a young Licchavi named "Delighting All Sentient Beings" arose with courage in that assembly and said this to the teacher Lungtenpa Brahmin Kaundinya: Great Brahmin, have you requested a sacred object from the Bhagavan? I will give you a sacred object. The Brahmin said: Young Licchavi, I do not need to make offerings to the Bhagavan or the ashes of relics, I wish to rely on a relic of the Bhagavan the size of a mustard seed. If one were to manifestly worship that relic the size of a mustard seed, it is said that one would obtain the position of the lord of the thirty-three gods. O young Licchavi, the sacred Golden Light Sutra, which is difficult for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to understand and comprehend, possessing such qualities and virtues, the Golden Light...
